HOLY SHIT!

Postby TheLurker » Wed Apr 25, 2012 7:31 pm

I always feed the squirrels and rabbits in my backyard. Sometimes when I first get home, sometimes later. When I got home, one of the rabbits was sitting under a bush. Just chillin'. About a half hour later I looked to see if there were squirrels to feed too. What did I see you ask? A good size hawk having dinner!! I didn't know I was fattening the critters to be dinner for a hawk. He just stood over it, looking around occasionally, ripping off pieces to eat. eventually he flew away, but I think it was because he was wary of anything else, not that he was full. I got a few crappy pics with my phone. I wish I had a better camera so I could have shared. It was sad but cool, in a nature sort of way.

I found a couple of baby rabbits or squirrels on the front porch doormat as I was leaving for Church Sunday. I put them on the grass and left. I didn't see them when I got back, so I hope their mama got them because I don't wanna think a hawk or something got em.

If I can get the picture of the corpse off my phone I will. the pics of the hawk standing over the body didnt come out so good because there isn't a zoom on my camera-phone. And I was NOT getting close to him and his dinner. You can sort of see the legs of the rabbit sticking straight out.

Had to save a baby bunny from my cat couple of weeks ago. She caught and brought it in the house. It was screeching and crying. Got her away from it and it ran off into another room. Couldn't get it so I closed the room to keep the cat out. Got it in the morning, and it was nice and unharmed. Put it out front and it hopped off back to the wisterias that I knew rabbits lived around. Everyone happy, except the cat.

I was wondering where Hawk's been. I would never have thought to check Lurker's backyard

I find chunks of rabbits or other animals' hair in my yard from time to time. There are a ton of hawks in my area in the woods behind my house. My parents' house is even more wooded. They often wake up to the sounds of screaming, dying animals being eaten. One time my Dad was walking out to get the mail and he saw a hawk swoop down and grab a morning dove and then land on a tree branch with it in its claws. My Dad tried to wave his arms and make noise to scare the hawk so it would let the dove go, but it just looked at my Dad like "what are you gonna do about it?" and then it flew away with its prey.

One late winter I was driving thru the parking of a K-Mart in Milwaukee and saw what I thought was a seagull, but when got closer to it the "seagull" turned out to be a big freaking bald eagle.I knew eagles could be seen in Wisconsin but to see one in the middle of the city was kind of unexpected.

My mother used to have a hummingbird feeder outside of her kitchen window. One day she was looking out, just enjoying the view of the hummingbirds when BAM!, a hawk drops in for lunch.

On another occasion, my wife and I were traveling from Missoula to Spokane on I-90 with a friend. I was looking out the window, enjoying the scenery when, just off the road, I saw a bald eagle perched on the carcass of a deer surrounded by a half-dozen or more huge ravens or crows, like a king holding court. One of the neatest things I've ever seen, and I had nothing to record it on.

They used to come hang out on the balcony of my old work office. I took pictures a couple times.
