I know Liefeld takes a lot of flack for his art style, but the simple truth is that there is not only a large market for his style, but it's large enough to have spawned several copycat artists. His mechanics and proportions are out of whack...I can't say they stink, because he can draw better than 90% of us at the ourhouse...but it's not like only hyper-realistic artists are in demand. Keith Giffen, Mike Mignola, Bill Sienkowicz, Norm Greyfoggle, just to name a few, are all artists with styles that are exaggerated in some way. You won't find much of their works in a book about precise proportions or realistic form. But they all are excellent artists that have been in demand at one time or another. Liefeld's style is far more cartoony and perhaps exemplifies the 90s attitude, but for certain types of stories, it works.
Still, I'd much rather prefer to be stuck in an elevator with Liefeld. I don't think Byrne would deign to speak to me, while Liefeld probably has some fun in-business stories to tell. From his public interaction, Byrne would spend the whole time complaining.
