Tatsunoko Marks 55th Anniversary With Egao no Daika TV Anime in January

The anime studio Tatsunoko Productions (Speed Racer, Gatchaman, Time Bokan, Infini-T Force) is marking its 55th anniversary with the new original television anime Egao no Daika (The Cost of Smiles), premiering on the WOWOW, Tokyo MX, and YTV channels in January 2019.

Tatsunoko describes the story:

On a planet far from Earth, there is a kingdom full of smiling faces. Princess Yūki is 12 years old, and about to enter a sensitive age in a person's life. Everyday, she cries, laughs, and sometimes, her heart throbs with excitement. All the while, she lives merrily in the royal palace. Filling her days with color are her loyal vassals: her tutor Reira, Izana who assists in political affairs, the leader of the chivalry Harold … and then, there is her childhood friend and aide Joshua.

"Yūki! If you have spirit and guts, you can do anything!"

"…No, not this again! Joshua, be nobler!"

Stella is 17 years old and a capable, reserved soldier. However, she is always smiling ... for smiling is essential to living.

This is a story of two girls born on distant planets.

Shit. I knew Sony purchasing Funimation would screw things up. Not happy that Cruncyroll is affiliated with Warner either.

Funimation, Crunchyroll End Content-Sharing Partnership

Crunchyroll and FUNimation Entertainment announced on Thursday that their partnership with to share content will end on Friday, November 9.

The streaming channel bundle service VRV, owned by Crunchyroll parent company Ellation, also announced that it will no longer have the FunimationNow streaming service as part of its VRV Premium Subscription, or as an individual channel subscription, as of November 9. Instead, the bundle will add the HIDIVE streaming service.

According to a memo to Funimation staff from Funimation's president and CEO Gen Fukunaga, FunimationNow subscribers will gain access to the subtitled versions of "several hundred" titles on November 9, but will lose a "handful" of dubbed titles. Crunchyroll also noted that a number of titles will leave both services, and that the companies will update later on which titles will be impacted.

Crunchyroll clarified, however, that currently-airing simulcasts and series that premiered during the partnership (including Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia) will still be available on Crunchyroll, and all planned home video releases will still ship as scheduled. Fukunaga also said that all titles licensed during the partnership will still be shared between the two companies.

Crunchyroll explained that the partnership is ending because "Funimation has decided to go their separate way." Fukunaga explained that Funimation's decision to end the partnership was due to its acquisition by Sony Pictures Television Networks last year, as Sony is investing in Funimation to make it a "global sub and dub anime brand." Fukunaga said that the partnership "ended amicably this month."

Studio Gokumi Reveals Laidbackers Original Theatrical Anime Project

Studio Gokumi revealed a new theatrical anime project titled Laidbackers on Friday. The studio is billing the film as the "final original theatrical anime of the Heisei era" (Japan is set to enter a new era after April 30, 2019 when the current emperor abdicates). The anime will have a limited two-week screening in Japan in spring 2019.

The anime takes place in modern Kyoto. Kumi is a college student who moves to Kyoto in order to take over the candy store inherited from her late grandmother. The house accompanying the candy store was supposed to be unoccupied, but there Kumi meets three women (Harami, Mai, and K) and a dog. The four are heroes who were reincarnated from their world into this one. One day the former demon king, who messed up her reincarnation and is now in the form of an elementary school student, appears and asks, "will you please collect the demon king fragments together with me?"
