I have to admit that McNiven's art on Civil War was a genuine pleasure to look at, but I thought the story just sucked... Some of Millar's worst stuff, IMO.

Verily.

Damn, I loved Civil War. The ending was meh, but overall it's one of my favorite reads. And I like Daken too. I never got into X-23.

The ending was one of the better parts. Millar just needed to work on it and expand it more.

Yeah that is a good assessment of Civil War, could have been thought out and executed better. (Still cannot buy Cap teaming up with the Punisher.)

Or Parker turning into a little conflicted bitch after the death of Bill Foster. No way he would have stood for that. He's one of the few characters that has always stood by the "death is not acceptable" ideal and has the raw physical power to back it up. No way that wouldn't have garnered a "This ends now!" speech from him.

Civil War was awesome. Great to see so many new readers from it.

As much as I hated it, I can see how CW attracted new readers.
It was well made and exciting with some gorgeous art.
The problem was that older readers like us just knew how wrong it was.

There are some ideas in it that are perfect (SHRA and Spider-Man unmasking) but needed some more time for development, Civil War, if done right, would've been as momentous as Watchmen or any other classic.

From what I read the thing that bothered me most about the Civil War was that Stark's position was only given a fair hearing in his own book. The rest seemed biased against registration. Now I would consider myself anti-registration, but I think it undercut the discussion that was supposed to be going on.

Civil War would have been fine if it had been written well. Spidey unmasking could have had a few years as a good status quo but it was just scrubbed out way too fast in favour of another, deeply divisive, one.

i agree that civil war would have been great if i knew nothing about the characters involved or their histories. great art, great overall concept, wretched execution.

None of the characters acted in character.

Spidey unmasking to the public was the single worst moment of that entire mini-series, no one who has read Spidey would think that is the choice the character would make after Gwen Stacey.

Punisher having some kind of hero worship for Captain America? That was about the dumbest thing ever, until they said that for some reason HE was the only one to break into The baxter building.

SHRA = Good Idea, Spider-Man unmasking = Terrible Idea

I have a huge problem with Spider-Man's secret identity as I would like to see him become a more major superhero in the Marvel universe on a level to what Captain America and Iron Man are. It's probably never going to happen but it was so close during Civil War.

You crazy!
Pete's great as a regular Joe Schmoe. Yeah, throwing him into the spotlight every now and then is fun, but only to see how Average Guy reacts to the attention.
Being a relateable human being one of his most appealing features. Becoming a public figure would lose that.
