I would say that the threat of the Chitauri is a bit simplistic and straightforward, just evil alien grunts, but as the movie has to establish so many heroes and give them their moments that a really complex villain isn't needed. But Loki is such a great bad-guy which kind of makes up for it.

I didn't read your review yet, if you thought that was directed at you.

(But although you can't really apply old saws like "auteur theory" to a Hollywood mishmash film like Avengers, there are still all the same elements in any other film in an action movie, after all there are technical reasons as well as subjective ones as to why a movie like, say, "Die Hard" is a better film than "The Expendables".)

I kind of blame 3D, since that's what almost every reviewer talks about instead, and something I have no interest in (at least as 3D is done now).

Did you check out my review? It's extremely amateurish, but I attempted to review the movie in an unbiased fashin, rather than a fan perspective.

I can't remember, I'll check it out later. I honestly wasn't talking about this site, I'm not sure I've read any here actually, most of the reviews I've been reading are on other sites. But I'll check them out here when I have some time to kill.

I never liked the Chitauri in their other Ultimate comic or DVD appearances, but it's a pretty comic booky concept to throw a wave of red shirts at the heroes. But IMO it works better on the page, it's just not as interesting when it plays out on the big screen, I think.

That's why having Loki as a villain makes up for the red-shirtiness of the Chitauri. He's a great actor and presence and has a real emotional connection with one of the heroes. His use of the Tesseract/Cosmic Cube also ties him to Captain America's movie back-story.

Yeah, he's a strong enough actor...even though he's nowhere near my favorite early Avengers villains, I know they have to use him to bring them together and all.

It's probably just my own weariness of superhero (and particularly origin stories) that accounts for my lack of true excitement for The Avengers.

But the are no origin stories in this movie, all the heroes have already been established in their own films, so it cuts to the chase.

Hiddleston is awesome in every conceivable way.

:smt102 He is the earliest Avenger villain (unless you want to include stuff like Avengers 1959 or the What If Avengers Agents of Atlas)...

Walmart Unveils Super Hero Augmented Reality App

Fans of "Marvel's The Avengers," prepare for game play! Beginning today, in advance of the film release of "Marvel's The Avengers" on May 4, only Walmart customers will have access to the Super Hero Augmented Reality (AR) game featuring their favorite Avengers, including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow. This new “Super Hero AR” app is available now for download at the iTunes App Store and Android Market. Once downloaded, customers have instant access to Hawkeye, and only from the aisles of their local Walmart stores, customers can then “unlock” the super powers of the five remaining Avengers and ultimately save the world.

I agree.

Most villains in movies have a horde of nameless goons who work for them. The Chitauri serve the same role as the people in a Bond villain's secret Volcano base.

The villain is Loki and they pretty much nailed it.

its perfectly correct since the site is based in the US, and the vast majority of the posters are from the US, so its counting down to the US premiere of the movie, which is midnight on May 3

Guys
From someone with a reasonable grasp of what makes a good/bad film, take it from me.
This is not a film to dissect and write a critique.
This is a film to sit back and enjoy the ride.
I really wasn't that excited until about a week ago.
I just thought it wouldn't work but by having all the main characters established early on there's very little need for exposition.
It's just 2 plus hours of action and all the better for it.

I watched this movie this weekend, and it is goddamn awesome!
I never felt the 2+ hours, and was interested and excited all the time.

I wish more movies were as fun and optimistic as Avengers (also it helps the action sequences are clear enough to understand what is going on).
