This. In Mass Effect 3 you are literally trying to recruit everybody that you can to band together and save the universe. Since you are on the front line, it doesn't make any sense to me that you can't recruit your own squad based on the existing former squad members. For instance, when you are leaving Earth and
James starts fighting with you about wanting to stay on Earth I should have been given the option to leave him there.. We should be able to have who we want on the team, maybe there could be consequences for not choosing certain characters, but once again, this being the final game in the Shepard trilogy, that should be our option.

I think that I said this before but for me, the only time that Ashley survived Virmire was during my very first play through. I learned my lesson when the game shoehorned her into a relationship with my Shepard. In all subsequent play throughs, I purposefully sent her to be cannon fodder and then left her ass on the planet.
I never regretted that decision until I had to listen to Kaiden's dialogue during the first few missions of Mass Effect 3...although I am sure that Ashley's dialogue would be just as sanctimonious as Kaiden's.
