Yeah, yeah, I'm a Scrooge about it. I hate classes (I love research), and I'm doing my last paper and then 4 exams (the 5th was due yesterday). BUT...

1. My adviser is probably going to offer a workshop (free) for those of us grad students who want it on a computer program to run General Equilibrium econometric models.

2. That Orlando thing - he'll pay for 2 extra workshops, plus the travel and conference, from my grant.

3. We sorted out details of my full-time summer employment. That is, I'll report to work anytime from 7am-7:30am (great time to bicycle - little traffic, cool mornings), I can have Wednesday afternoons off to continue volunteering elsewhere, and I can have some random Fridays off to meet travel wants (like going to see Mary in DC a few weekends, and traveling to NYC for my Indian friend's Hindu wedding - sorry, Melon, I'd love to hang out again, hopefully for longer, but I can't on this swing because the celebration is an all-day and night thing, it seems :( ).

4. He's going to give me a key to his office so I can learn how to use a $7200 statistical program when he's not busy there.

5. He still may send me to Costa Rica next summer for field research if he's notified this summer that he gets this grant he wants.

6. He wants me to learn how to use a government database.

All of this he tells me in one day!

And then there's Mary sending me something (she says I'll like it, despite begging her not to get me anything. Begging).

And, lastly, there's a really cool Andrew Bird song that is just great on birthdays (Happy Birthday Song).

When I wake up
in the morning
I pour the coffee
read the paper
then I slowly
and so softly
do the dishes
feed the fishes

sing me Happy Birthday
sing it like it's going to be your last day
like its Hallelujah
don't just let it pass on through ya
it's a giant among cliches
and that's why I want you to sing it anyway
sing me Happy Birthday
'cause hell what's it all about
anyway

sing me Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday
like it's gonna be your last day
here on earth

So sorry about my curmudgeonliness yesterday.

Oh, and totally fair warning on this: the hindu wedding ceremony is so long and really quite boring and undecipherable. Make sure you make friends with someone who knows what's going on, if you're interested. It's all about the reception in the evening when everyone gets decked out and gets sloshed and dances and makes a fool of himself. If you want to take a date, you could always put Melon in a saree ;)

You'll meet people.

Oh, and try to see the coconut splitting. That's my favourite part.
