That reminds me, wasn't there a Marvel comic when all the gods both Norse and Greek got together to figure out how to defeat the Celestials?

Joe Quesada. "It's Magic!"

But then, given DC's turn around in sales, Dan Didio.

I said "in all of fiction"!

Although in hindsight that seemed like a peculiar stipulation to make. Was I worried about anyone trying to suggest some real life sorcerers? :smt017

I guess it depends on how you define a sorcerer, or even how you define magic. A lot of authors use a pretty "soft" magic system, making the limits of their characters' powers pretty ill defined.

That said (MAJOR BOOKENDING SPOILERS from Brandon Sanderson's Misborn trilogy):

Sazed essentially becomes God at the end of Hero of Ages, so I'd rank him as the most powerful magic user I can think of off the top of my head.

Fizban was merely posing as a sorcerer. He never really was one.

Well, there's Elminster. And Pug from Raymond Feist's Riftwar series. Both of these guys have thrown down with gods and demons and shit like that. They've crossed different worlds to fuck shit up.

Because of the over-the-top nature of superhero comics, I don't think there are gonna be wizards more powerful than guys like Dr. Strange and Dr. Fate in regular fantasy fiction. But Pug and Elminster are cosmic-level powers, so they at least come close to if not match the superhero wizards.

I seem to recall Dr. Strange once tossing planets around like playthings, so I think I have to give it to him, but I don't think you can apply Strange to the same scale as Merlin, Gandalf or Elminster.

IIRC, Patryns and and Sartan were sorcerers

EDIT - from wikki
As to the actual nature of Zifnab within the world of the Death Gate Cycle, Hickman wrote: "Zifnab was actually a Sartan wizard who opposed the council's decision to sunder the world. Zifnab is not a god ... indeed, he is actually a chosen and blessed subject of the dragon-avatars of the Death Gate series."

and "strangely" enough Zifnab repeatedly reference things from Fizban's adventures and nearly called himself Fizban during one story IIRC

Yeah that was sort of what I found fun about this topic, magic is so ill defined that it forces one to really reach to find comparisons between the various candidates.

So...what are you saying here, that Fizban's not really Palatine anymore or something?
