It's just your basic Little Engine that Could story of a guy who's too small overcoming the odds to play on a sports team. It's about American Football.

OK, so in real life he's actually a heel?

It's sappy but still a good movie.

Yes. This too :-D

Basically, it's like Rocky but college football

Yep. And the school in question is loved way way way too much by the media to the point where everyone that isn't a fan hates them. And the coach wasn't actually a dick and yet due to the movie is remembered as one.

In real life, he's a motivational speaker IIRC.

Yeah, I saw that last bit in the article: I just know nothing about the real guy. How come he's such a dick?

This is his motivational speaker bio:

Against all odds on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, in twenty-seven seconds, carved his name into history books as perhaps the most famous graduate of the University of Notre Dame. The son of an oil refinery worker and third of fourteen children, Ruettiger rose from valleys of discouragement and despair to the pinnacles of success. Today, he is one of the most popular motivational speakers in the United States. It took years of fierce determination to overcome obstacles and criticisms, yet Ruettiger achieved his first dream - to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. As fans cheered "RU-DY, RU-DY," he sacked the quarterback in the last twenty-seven seconds of the only play in the only game of his college football career. He is the only player in the school's history to be carried off the field on his teammates' shoulders.

He's one of those guys that constantly brings up his accomplishments and thinks he's the greatest guy in the world. You'd have to hear him talk but he's a lot like a bunch of people you've met in everyday life that are assholes.

Well, he's basically made his whole life, and a decent chunk of change apparently, based on 27 seconds when he was 26.

That's cause you didn't see 24 S5 when Rudy was promoted to Director of CTU and was an uber dick plus almost caused the destruction of America and Jack Bauer.

In fairness he did end up sacrificing himself to save everyone else.

Yeah but he was such a dick to everyone. Sure he made everyone chant one last time, "Rudy! Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!" as that nerve gas hit his lungs while he saved CTU. But does that make up for almost screwing over America and Jack Bauer?

I say yes, but I'm the forgiving type. Besides I like to think of him more as Fat Hobbit.
