Nightfly's Music Video Week in Review (week of 10/23/11)

In this inaugural column I'm still experimenting and very much feeling my way through the dark. I imagine the look and feel of this first incarnation will be quite different than the look and feel to be found six or eight months from now. This debut entry features links to two live new releases by LeAnn Rimes, around twenty videos over all, as well as a couple links to Making Of videos. In cases where I miss a video please let me know because I plan on including a few make-good videos every week if necessary. Even if I always feature 15-20 videos per week I'm sure there'll still be some I either miss or choose to omit. As a general guideline the videos running the greatest risk of exclusion are ones repeatedly using the N-word and ones that "sing" in such a way that make Rob Zombie seem like Perry Como.
Though I'll try to keep a functionally diverse balance of musical styles here, there'll surely be weeks that favor one genre over another. Last week, for example, CMT (Country Music Television) released far fewer new videos than usual. I also hope to feature more music-centric GetGlue stickers than this edition provides but the fact is this week I only discovered these few. If you're a fan of Lights you can snag a sticker for the official "Toes" video, and below you'll see one of this column's tied winners also offers a sticker (a couple, actually).
Since I'm still deciding how to do this I've decided to list each week's "winner" (i.e., my favorites) in the middle/center of the column instead of at the top or bottom of the page. I also reserve the right to throw in a miscellaneous video or two just 'cause I feel like it. I won't be ordering the non-winners accept for alphabetically (by song title). As I write this paragraph I still haven't decided if I'll include a wildcard (or two) in this debut column, or not.

Readers of my TV Week in Review column may remember a video by Cage the Elephant I recently named as a Favorite from a couple weeks back. It tells the story of a sadly misunderstood Godzilla-type monster that suffers horribly due to miscommunication. If you haven't seen "Aberdeen" yet check it out then watch its informative (newly released) Making Of clip below.

Before closing out this first Music Video WiR column I wanted to shed light on the origin of this column's Chasing The Matrix name. Whether in TV show references on Fringe or AMC's Talking Dead, or in songs that come out continually, The Matrix and its themes still remain relevant and inspirational to artists & musicians alike. Here are three links to recently released videos that inspired me to name this new column in honor of The Matrix; "Song of Siren," "Earthquake," and "Last Man Standing."

I also couldn't end this first installment without recalling the first two music videos that *officially* launched my Fave *New* Music Video of the Week category for my TV WiR columns. That first week Kari Kimmel's super-fun "Go" hit (see her on ABC's The Middle Nov. 9th), and I featured a song by Cascada (then already out a few weeks) in honor of Outhouse Webmaster Supreme Jude's relocation to sunny "San Francisco." This inaugural column wouldn't be complete without a nod to those vids that helped get it all started.




If you're in the Los Angeles area this week you'd be wise to check out a couple sweet singer/songwriters performing live this Thursday & Saturday. Platinum Hit finalist Jes Hudak headlines a show Thursday @ 10pm (11/3) at The Hotel Cafe. Special guests include Jen Hirsh, DJ Quikie Mart, and lovely fellow Platinum Hit contestant Amber Ojeda!
Saturday (the Fifth of November) remember Joy Valencia will be playing a rare acoustic set at Code C for a 'meet the designer' trunk show from 3-7p showcasing ALPINESTARS by Denise Focil & ASTARS' new Fall & Holiday lines. Attendees will indead be in for a treat.

I hope this first new music entry showed enough promise that you come back again next week. I have no idea what videos may be released this week but I certainly look forward to finding out & sharing my favorites with you. Until next time, Happy Halloween & Keep Your Groove On!

I watched the new Beavis and Butthead tonight, and it seemed so weird that they were watching music videos. I wonder how kids today view that, having not grown up with MTV (a music video playing MTV) as a staple of life. I wonder how stuff like MTV2 does in the ratings. Do a lot of people still watch videos?

I don't know, but, I'd guess most folk get their vids online now. VEVO lets you create a video playlist of up to 75 songs which I assume you can access on your phone or any internet connected device. Plus OnDemand offers music videos so some peeps probably go that route. I buy dvds of 'em (hehe), old school.

Surely Hollywood still watches music videos. After film school (or instead of it) music videos are where future film directors build their reels. David Fincher was an early example of this career path and now I'd bet a majority of today's blockbuster directors dabbled in music video (and/or commercials) early on.
