Nightfly's Music Video Week in Review 12/4/11 - Taylor Swift, Pitbull, Shakira, and more!

Postby LOLtron » Sun Dec 11, 2011 5:25 pm

Nightfly lists his preferred picks among last week's newly released music videos.

Chasing The Matrix:
Nightfly's Music Video Week in Review  (week of 12/4/11)

A bunch of new videos were released last week making this a fun column to put together. Along with three make-up videos included this time, I'm also highlighting no less than six new Holiday treats plus I'm unveiling a new semi-regular section this week reserved for videos that, imo, deserve Beavis & Butt-Head type mockery.

Two columns ago, covering the week of 11/20, I featured Katharine McPhee performing "Beautiful" (from the upcoming TV series, SMASH). This past week (12/8) The Making of Beautiful was released. Check it out (below).

VEVO routinely offers live AOL Sessions performances I've generally opted not to feature. This week, I'm happy to share these AOL Sessions clips by one of my favorite groups in music today. Enjoy these five live tracks from Florence + The Machine's sessions: "Shake It Out", "What the Water Gave Me", "Never Let Me Go", "Cosmic Love", and (one of my all-time favorite songs) "Dog Days Are Over". I figured I might as well also include these live musical performances from three weeks ago that only hit the web last week, from NBC's Saturday Night Live: "Shake It Out" and "No Light, No Light".

Regular readers of these columns may remember that JoJo's video for "Disaster" appeared in my WiR (the last week of Nov.) as a Video of the Week Runner Up. Last week, a cool BTS video was released for it - check out the engaging clip below.
The Making of Disaster by JoJo

In my most recent column I highlighted Jake Owen's country single, "Alone With You." Last Monday (12/5) the BTS 'making of' that video hit the net! Take a look-see here.

It begins  (in alphabetical order, except for the winners)....
* Warning: videos below may contain mature content not suitable for all ages *

"A Billion Hits" by Ross Lynch (from Austin & Ally

"Back In Time" by Liquid Kaos (ft. Kirsty Hawkshaw)

"Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen

"Change The Sheets" by Kathleen Edwards

"Crash Your Party" by Karmin

* Read about Karmin and their upcoming 2012 release here.

"Devil's Work (Film Accompaniment)" by Mike Snow

"Don't Stop" by Electric Touch

"Don't Stop (Color On The Walls)" by Foster The People (Starring Gabourey Sidibe

"Ghetto" by The-Dream (ft. Big Sean)

Abbey Dawn

Favorite *New* Music Video of the Week:
"Ours" by Taylor Swift

Runners Up: [tie]
"International Love" by Pitbull (ft. Chris Brown)

"World's Got A Handle" by Sun Wizard

Shakira

"Good Night" by Reece Mastin

"Ground Shake" by DiRTY RADiO

"Midnight City" by M83

"Mona Lisa (When The World Comes Down)" by The All-American Rejects

"Seven Or Eight Days" by Adrian Glynn

"Stealin'" by Catherine MacLellan

"Time Stands Still" by The All-American Rejects

"Yellow Halo" by Goldfrapp

--------------------------------
*NEW* Beavis & Butt-Head Section: [only for mocking]
These are videos that I initially considered excluding for their sheer degree of terribleness, but then, I thought about what B&B might have to say about 'em. Watch the material they'd have to work with for yourself, if interested, by clicking one of the three links below.
Beavis & Butt-Head
"Candyfloss" by Jonny
"Down" by Summer Camp
"I'm So Lazy" by Let's Wrestle
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Make-up Section: [Videos that should've appeared in my previous column]

"Remember It's Me" by Gotthard

"Video Voyeur" by The Good Natured

"The Christmas Song" by Lisa Matassa
-------------------------------------------------------------------
New Holiday Video Releases:
For this week's Holiday offerings I present two (linked) videos by young opera sensation Jackie Evancho, another Christmas track by Justin Bieber, a comedic TV-MA video featuring puppetry and two preview videos from this Tuesday (12/13) night's Christmas themed episode of Glee (on FOX).

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Amber Riley & Glee Cast

"Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Glee Cast

"The First Noel" by Jackie Evancho

"I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Jackie Evancho

"Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" (Arthur Christmas Version) by Justin Bieber

"Merry Christmas, Kiss My Ass" by All Time Low  [TV-MA]

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Bonus Videos:
Friday, December 9th, VEVO released two solo performances excerpted from U2's documentary film, From the Sky Down. Watch Bono perform "So Cruel" (below) then check out The Edge singing "Love Is Blindness" here.

Earlier last week Shakira released a couple live performances from Paris as excerpted music videos, see both embedded below.
"Whenever, Wherever" (Live from Paris) by Shakira

"Loca" (Live from Paris) by Shakira

* Learn how you can create your own visual fragrance and possibly win a chance of winning a fragrance signed by Shakira here.

To close out this column, I'd like to celebrate the December 5th release of Lioness: Hidden Treasures with these Tribute videos about the late, great Amy Winehouse. On the day of the album's release, this 14:29 long video hit the web featuring Amy's producer & friend Salaam Remi remembering her with personal stories about the tracks they worked on together throughout her career. Hidden Treasures Story - Amy Winehouse.
* Read about it here, then enjoy the video (released a few weeks' back) for, "Our Day Will Come" here.

Thanks for visiting this column and please let me know if I've missed something. As always, Have a Great Week & Keep Your Groove On!

Midnight City

Often artists debut their videos on their own site (or on YouTube) up to a week before they premier on VEVO. YouTube is just waaay to vast to stay on top of like I do VEVO, and since I obviously can't visit every artists' website each week sometimes VEVO's release date is the last (if not only) chance for me to catch stuff.
This issue came up once before with a Michelle Branch video which she released on her own site a full week (fairly standard) before it hit VEVO.

My system for creating this column isn't perfect, but as I've asked before, if you know of any videos I fail to catch when they *first* come out please don't hesitate to post them or inform me. Sorry for the confusion. I'm doing my best, I promise.

Excuses. :smt011 :P

Have you tried following various labels, in order to get a good feel for recent releases?

I follow a few.

Just now, via Lennon's twitter, I learned about this video which was released 12/9. If I'd known about it earlier it would've definitely been featured in this current column.
