Go ahead.

Or, you can invest your money in a medical savings plan and earn some interest on it and avoid the penalty.
However, Liefeld is an enigma wrapped in a pouch-filled, muscular, footless conundrum.

1) Everyone has to “buy” insurance or pay a fine.
The law says most people have to have insurance — but not everyone has to go out and buy it. If you have insurance through your employer or a government program, like Medicare, that counts. About 250 million insured people already meet the rules, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
That leaves about 7 million people who will have to buy insurance without the help of one of the subsidies built into the law, according to Urban Institute researchers.

5) The penalties are exorbitant. I could even get thrown in jail.
Being uninsured doesn’t mean you will be thrown in prison. You may have to pay a penalty — or as the court ruled Thursday — a tax. Starting in 2014, that fee is as little as $95, but it does rise to up $695 or 2.5 percent of taxable income in 2016. Subsequent increases are linked to the cost of living adjustments.
One point of comparison: In Massachusetts, where a state mandate exists, only about 1 percent of taxpayers paid a penalty in 2009.

Regardless, the problem is with our health care and insurance systems. Maybe if one day we are given an option for a President with a spine and some shred of integrity, we can work on real issues rather than forcing people to buy shit.

Exactly. Being disabled its now nice to know I'll be able to get healthcare and not get turned down for it because I'm a walking pre-existing condition.

Now granted, its still paying more money then I'd like to, but hopefully the costs get worked on next. As for the mandatory part, if nothing else, I think everyone can agree that sure, we should all have healthcare.

Again, it comes down to how much we have to pay for what we get.

It seems like a common gripe that people don't take responsibility for themselves and their lives, so I'm not sure why people are pissed off at this, since it's making people do that. If you already have insurance, it's invisible to you.

I've heard rumors about this, but I haven't actually seen anyone say it sounds like one of those things which gains life on the internet but isn't widely true.

We have canadian posters here, in the past they've been ambivalent on their health care program, from what I've seen it sounds awful though. Huge waiting lists, high taxes, high costs. I've even read that it was declared a huge offense against human rights which led to them allowing private clinics. I have no personal experience, I'm always interested in hearing some first hand thoughts.

A big chunk of the problem we've had has had to do with a fast growing population and one that often abused the system and ran back to their origin country. American influences have been kicking up and yes, tons of mismanagement has resulted in it not being perfect. But what is? A great deal of it is political bullshit that screws it up. Still, we don't let everyone die a slow painful death because they cannot afford healthcare. A great deal of Canadian politics, which ties to those wait lists, is regionalism crap.
