In the first scene, the boy was reading an issue of Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine. At first, I figured that Lindelof was the writer of the episode or a producer and had a product placement, but I looked on imdb at the first commercial break and couldn't find him associated with the series. So then I just figured that, since UHVW took like 6 years to come out, it was a canny metatextual joke saying that UHVW was the comic equivalent of a fairy tale, thought to be mythological for so very long...but then it finally did turn up in the real world, like the fairy tale characters in Once Upon a Time.

It has a number of LOST easter eggs
Once Upon a Time is from the minds of a couple of LOST writers, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, who not only make allusions to LOST (The town clock being stuck at 8:15, 108 being Henry's home address, Apollo candy bars, etc.), but borrow the basic setup of an average episode of LOST: Inter-cutting flashbacks with the current storyline.

Actually if you watch when they dump all the things they stole and slipped into his bag you see a Apollo Candy Bar.

Talk about reading too much into it. It's cause Kitsis and Horowitz were Lost hacks...er writers.

I'm fairly certain he was joking. I think it was more a comment about how long it took for the book to come out, like a mythological creature.

I thought the whole spinner rack was wildly out of place, as no stores have spinner racks, and the contents were all kind of crazy. Looked like a really old Fantastic 4 issue that appeared to be pretty old, a random issue of Kazar, plus Ultimate Hulk vs Wolverine, all from different eras. I don't think there was a deeper meaning. other than the fact it's on ABC so they kept it as being all Marvel stuff.

which isn't surprising, since if you look at Big Bang Theory (made by Warner bros) all of the comics have been DC (especially since the New 52)

Well yea. The early seasons had ads for Image books in the background though. Hell they even keep having Sheldon dress up as The Flash.
