Time to decide what our next book will be ??

Let's pick something more upbeat and interesting and not so "literary" lol

As I said earlier, I am passing up the coming book to catch up on some of my own reading. I am currently reading the The Good Serpent and the Evil Serpent by Charlesworth. Not suitable club selection. Pretty dry and repetitive, really, but I am mostly done. Then I am reading Moonwalking with Einstein, which is about the memory olympics. Don't know much more about it, but it is aimed at the general reader. Then I am reading Psyche by Rohde. Another academic text. I expect to have Charlesworth and Moonwalking done by the time you're finished whatever it is you pick, and then I'll rejoin.

Has anyone read Sabriel by Garth Nix? It's a longtime favorite of mine, and has the benefit of being:

A relatively light read

A fantasy book with dark themes and an innovative take on the genre

A self contained story that is itself the beginning of a trilogy, so if you like it there's more to read.

My picks shouldn't carry much weight bc I haven't read the last two books  ...however I am reading Sandman Slim now and it's pretty great stuff

I'm about 25% in but it's about this magician who is sent to hell by his close set of magician buddies in a deal with demons to gain more power. He lives in Hell for 11 years and takes part in gladiator type fights and becomes essentially unkillable and an assassin. He escapes Hell and the book follows his return and hunting of the people who betrayed him.

Oddly enough I don't like magic really but the dark nature of this book makes me overlook my disdain for magic books

I'm perfectly happy with a fantasy book.

Both Jude's and Chubble's choices sound good to me.

I vote for the Sandman Slim, I've had it to read for a while now.

I'm ok with either.

Maybe we can do one after the other so I can order both at the same time. :smt102
