I think exes refer to ex-humans, but there are also ex-heroes (like that one guy by the Hollywood sign).

No, I'm saying that asking a question about something that occurs in the first chapter doesn't require a spoiler tag. Chubbles' answer would obviously be spoilerish, but for someone like you or me that is just starting to read the book, it's all conjecture/guessing.
