I don't know why Bettman still has a job. I guess he hasn't cost the owners money yet, so that's good. But failed expansion, no tv deals of any significance, falling off the national sports landscape in the states. People SHOULD get fired for that.
I think more teams in Canada would work well. I also think there shouldn't be more than 20-24 teams total. Maybe move two teams up North and contract another 4 or 6 and then get the league healthy.
When Bettman took over hockey was clearly the #4 sport in the US. It was coming off one of the biggest eras of all time. Super Mario and The Great One were the biggest stars, but casual sports fans in the US knew the names of everyone on the All Star teams and then some. Guys like Messier were as famous as anyone playing baseball or football or basketball.
Then he started moving teams. Then he added like 6 teams in 2 years at the end of the 90's and into the start of this decade. Plus he was in charge of two big lockouts. The second lockout killed the sport in the US. All the dumb shit before that really really hurt it and it was free falling in the American consciousness, however that second lockout canceled a season, took the NHL off of the American radar for far too long, and led to ESPN ending their relationship with them while they moved to the Vs network that many markets don't carry and no one watches.
Bettman should be fired. He should have been fired 4 or 5 years ago before that last contract expired or right after the lockout and move to Vs. He's done a great job of killing the sport in the US.
