Pokémon X & Y - Special Edition Console & New Pokémon
During the special preview airing of the new movie, a trailer for Pokémon X & Y was shown and within it, it was announced that a special 3DS LL will be revealed. Due for release in October 2013, the console features a special print of Xerneas & Yveltal on the top case. It is said to come in Blue & Red colours. Also, during the trailer, a Pokémon called Orotto (オーロット), possibly romanised to Aulotte, was said to feature, but this is yet to be confirmed.
I'm the relapsed fan except that a lot of the new concepts really improved the game for me and were part of what lured me back (though I still have a huge amount of catching up to do. Entire generations are just blank spots for me).
Every Gen has brought so many little quality of life improvements that doubling back to play old games can be pretty rough so I'd suggest leaving the blanks in place. Oddly though the Gold\Silver remakes in Gen 4 were developed by different folks than Gen 5 so they have different improvements that didn't all get carried forward. Would be nice to see Gen 6 take the best bits of both.

That's basically what happened. I started with Heartgold, thinking that would be a gentle reintroduction because before that the last game I played was Gold. And it was a fantastic game but I would find it really hard to play something from Gen 3 now because the physical/special mechanics of Gen 4 were such a huge improvement. And I miss not having Pokémon follow you around in Black and White.
Boo! I really love having the touchscreen to make my life marginally easier, every little helps.
The Phys\Special split is one of the best things the games ever did, even moreso than introducing Day\Night and genders but the reduced importance of HM's and infinite TM's in Gen 6 make the single player game so much more enjoyable. I no longer need to drag around a sixth member just to Cut and Flash my way through certain areas and everyone can has Thunderbolt.
Oh God HMs are so annoying. It got really ridiculous when it reached the point that even having one Pokémon slot entirely wasted on a HM slave wasn't enough. And Arceus help you if you need to carry an egg around or something, as well.
I end up taking the game's legendary to fight the elite 4 with since the whole game I play with a party of five and a bitch. Gen 6 made catching up a sixth man much simpler though, so I was able to field a full squad of ass kickers including one that hadn't even fully evolved.
