IMO - The best of the new Gen VI'ers based on battling ability...

Greninja (with the Protean ability) (also the most fun of the starters)
Goodra (great Attack & Sp Atk - but very weak on D)
Noivern (Dragon's are always good as long you don't meet ice)(Noivern has incredible speed)
Hawlucha (great speed and attaack)
Aegislash (Powewrful -with Stance Guard/No Guard - but slow)

Also rans: Gogoat, Clawitzer, Tyrantum, Aurorus & Charizard (with Charizardite X).

All the Megas are fun but I wish they changed type like Charizard X and Mewtwo X do.

Field Move Dispersal - no preference
Cut - Pangaroo, Hawlucha
Rock Smash - Gogoat, Pangaroo
Strength - Gogoat, Pangaroo, Hawlucha
Surf - Gogoat, Pangaroo
Fly - Hawlucha
By the time you need Waterfall, you'll have other options
I don't remember Flash being used anywhere

And welcome back to wasting your precious time on pocket monsters.

Thanks for the recommendations I'll definitely try to use some of those guys.

Any thoughts on when to level the pokemon?

That's a lengthy answer because it depends on how you want to play the game (i.e I like 'sweeping' teams - Attack/Sp Atk + Speed are keys. Other players build 'walls' with massive HP, Defense & Sp D and then there are the mixed fans. Also there's the WTF moves available that add the right amount of surprise in battling.

But keep in mind - as you play the established game, you won't be properly 'training' your team (that's where EV & IV training comes into play post game when you can build a truly competitive team). So, the team you travel with and grow attached too can be good battlers but they won't be at thier potential.

So with this said I only have enough time to give you a possible Greninja set up...

Froakie - learns Bounce (a great Fly attack) at Lvl 39
Frogadier - learns Bounce at lvl 44
Greninja - never learns Bounce
So if you want Bounce - keep Froakie until Lvl 39

Froakie - learns Hyrdo Pump at lvl 48
Grogadier learns Hyrdo Pump at Lvl 55
Greninja learns Hydro Pump at Lvl 60
So if you want Hydro Pump earlier in the game - keep Froakie until Lvl 48

Froakie - never learns Water Shuriken
Frogadier - never learns Water Shuriken
Greninja - learns Water Shuriken at Lvl 36 and again at Lvl 75
So if you want Water Shuriken - evolve Froakie at Lvl 35 & Frogadier at Lvl 36 - otherwise you wait until Lvl 75

It all complicated - but in a fun way.

Who'd you take? If you want Charizard early, I hope you took Chespin.

The Fox guy :?

I thought the professor gave you your choice of the original starters when you first meet him?

Yes he does - I was just saying that because you'll have a redundancy with two fire Pokemon (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Just got the EXP share :band

That makes grinding infinitely more tolerable.

What other suggestions do you have for a water type pokemon? I noticed that I can only get Clawitzer through trade on the Y version of the game.

1st) there's wonder trade (or normal trade if you give me your info).

B) Around the same time you would get the Clawitzer family, you also find the Barbarade (H2O + Rock) & Dragalage (H2O + Poison) clans - and that's about it Very few Water Pokemon this generation - but

3rd) As mentioned before, Surf and other water attacks show up in unexpected places (like GoGoat (Grass) & Pangaroo Fight/Dark).
