Possible OldBoy Remake

Postby BAMJoe » Wed Jul 06, 2011 4:23 pm

:-( No, just no.

http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2 ... directing/

Oldboy died in 2009, or so we thought. Talk of a Hollywood remake of Park Chan-Wook’s South Korean action film — which was itself based on the manga from Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya — has picked up again, with Twitch reporting that Spike Lee is in talks to direct. No source is named, so consider this a rumor for now, albeit a very compelling one.

A number of names have circled the project since it was first revealed in 2008 that DreamWorks and Universal were after the remake rights. Will Smith was pegged to star and Steven Spielberg to direct.Justin Lin was reportedly in there at some point as a potential director as well. Mark Protosevich almost came on to write a script, but the plans ended up falling apart when a legal battle erupted between the original film’s producers and the manga’s publisher over the sale of the rights.

I think that’s how it all went down. It’s been a long, strange trip so far for Oldboy, and it’s only going to get stranger if Lee lands the gig.

I don't think that anyone at the studio has read the manga, or watched the movie if the bolded part was at any point true.

I'd be way more interested in what Spike Lee would do with the story than I would if it was Speilberg and Will Smith, but there's really no way that an American remake would be willing to go far enough that it would be anything other than a typical revenge movie.

I thought Oldboy was overrated. Too many people hyped it up for me I think.

I didn't know what Oldboy even was when I saw it. I'd heard the name mentioned, but never paid attention to anything anyone said about it. And I still thought it was overrated.

I figured, maybe it was just some lost in translation type shit. Not the movie with Scarlet Jo and Bill Murray. I mean, some shit was just lost in the act of translating the movie to human from whatever it was originally created in, on some distant planet where that shit might have made sense. And like BAMJoe said, something must have gotten lost in translation if this is a Will Smith, Steven Spielberg project, or even a Spike Lee joint.

I mean, it's like if Pixar decided to remake Human Centipede.

For fuck's sake, Hollywood. Make an original film! It's not that hard. What's next? Colgate Toothpaste: The Movie? The Piece of Fluff I Just Saw On My Floor 2? Green Lantern Reboot?

STOP LOOKING FOR OTHER PEOPLES' THINGS THAT YOU CAN MAKE INTO MOVIES AND START MAKING MOVIES!!!!

If you take away all the shocking things that make the movie awesome, it just becomes a kind of generic revenge movie with a slightly interesting premise that involves cool use of a hammer.

The shocking things that make it a truly awesome movie are too shocking for a mainstream US movie. I think it would take a guy like Cronenberg to do it justice, and at that point it wouldn't really be mainstream and would instead be aimed at such a small crowd that it makes no sense to do the movie.

It's a great movie, you should watch it, but it's not something I think would be made here and certainly wouldn't be made here on a big scale that they seem to be aiming for.

It's really hard to explain what the big deal is without spoiling the main premise of the movie. The movie really revolves heavily upon that premise too.

Yeah, the whole movie is about finding out why things happened and what's going on, and that's where all the fucked up stuff is. To explain it, ruins all the surprises later in the movie.
