You know who else hates Preacher? The terrorists.

So, we should all love Preacher so the terrorists don't win.

I don't know what it is, but I could never get into Preacher, it just seemed like sensationalism for the sake of it. I just couldn't get interested in the characters or their situations. I usually like Ennis too, his runs on Hellblazer, Punisher, Hitman, Dredd and his Ghost Rider mini were all excellent in my opinion, but I just didn't care for Preacher.

Punchy wrote:I disagree, there is a lot more behind Preacher than just gross-out gags and cursing.

It's a series with something to say about the nature of religion, about what America means, about the nature of heroism, and just real people.

It's got a lot of heart behind it, take Arseface, on the surface a one-note joke character used for toilet humour, but the character is given real depth (his origin one-shot is fantastic), and is used to comment on the nature of fame.

Yes, there are OTT moments, but that only makes it more fun.
The way you describe it makes me wonder if down deep, the series takes itself too seriously. I don't mind serious storytelling, but self-important serious storytelling? Blah.
Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Completely not the point I was making, it's the combination of the deeper stuff and the silly stuff which makes the series work.

I couldn't handle Preacher's messages if they were presented straight, but Ennis' use of humour and the ridiculous makes it much more palatable. The same way that something like Team America has messages underneath the stupidness.

It's mainly a fun ride, but there is more too it than Ennis making poo jokes and saying Fuck, which is what the OP was suggesting

Yeah, Fables, which is the non-super title for people who only read capes.
