Aside from District 9, there hasn't been much good sci-fi in the last few years.

I don't really count Star Trek since it's really its own thing.

Did you see Source Code? I thought that was a very good, underrated film of last year.

Also I thought the new Planet of the Apes film was spectacular.

Re semi-recent sci-fi films: I really liked A Scanner Darkly. I thought it was a great adaptation and a very cool movie. It had the perfect look for its subject matter.

I saw this last night. I did like it, but I had only seen one trailer for it and didn't know much about it other than it was supposed to be a sort of prequel to Alien. My issues with it:

There were a couple of absolutely useless subplots. These were the dumbest scientists ever seen in a serious sci-fi movie. A couple of characters motivations were completely unclear. You are left to make up your own story for why they did what they did.

I'm really hoping there's an extended edition that fills in a few of the blanks, and it feels like there almost has to be. It wasn't a rehash of Alien, and I think that is what they were going for. You see creatures and places that look familiar, but it's different enough you don't quite know what to expect. I completely understand the reviews being all over the map. It has it's share of problems and that's going to bother a lot of people, but overall I really enjoyed it. There were a lot of people leaving the theater saying they weren't sure if they liked it or not.

From all the prequels to well know movie franchises I had seen, this is probably the one I liked the best. I would describe it not as "the origin of the story we all know" but instead as "a different story that happened before the one we know",that's the best description I can give.

I was entertained but confused as well.

Great special effects but like Thunderstorm said, dumb as hell scientists.

I left with more questions than I had going in.

My wife laughed @ the caesarean section part.

Personally didn't like it. Maybe the expectations were too high.

I thought it was curious that this is a "prequel", but then weren't the two Aliens Vs. Predator films too?

That was the scariest part for me. I recently had my apendix removed and got similar staples in my stummic. Makes me think it might not be my apendix they took out of me!!!

Just saw the movie, and while entertaining I found a number of things implausible:

[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
The fact that our technology would have advanced so far within this century. The cavalier attitude of everyone, especially the scientists. A group of unprofessional people would be used on such a mission. The fact some of them never met each other. No probes or robots sent to check out the structure before just driving up to it. Taking off their helmets just because they can breathe. What about microbe contamination? What's the sense of decontaminating after when stuff could be inside their suits or bodies? The two stranded guys just walking around instead of staying in place. Nobody keeping constant track of them. Then the one guy acting like the snake-like creature in the liquid is going to be friendly. Are you kidding me? The guy with the parasite in his eye not getting medical help right away. The C-section, you're telling me it wasn't connected to anything in her body like her uterus or arteries, so she would bleed to death after having it yanked out? Then walking around like she had a paper cut?. And when the two women are running in the end to avoid being squished, why not run to the side instead of staying in the line of the falling ship. All these things and more bugged me.

I know. The wife and I had fun picking things like that apart as well. :D
