At this point, I'm not sure anyone has a choice. And I say that working in one of the few industries where there are jobs, at least around here. But if you're not getting a job at some tech or internet startup, or in banking or something, prospects are pretty grim for anything that pays a living wage. And assuming you can get a job and get off unemployment, you're not much better off anyway.

Another point Yoni brings up is childcare, which itself can eat up half a salary. Fifty years ago one person's income could easily support a family. Now almost everyone needs two. Life has gotten twice as expensive, and wages are now half as valuable. And that money doesn't go to food or anything tangible. It goes to debt of one kind or another. It's a shitty system and there's no way out for most people.

Glubb Pasha learned that different empires had similar cultural changes while experiencing a life cycle in a series of stages that could overlap. He generalized about empires having seven stages of development, identifying these successive ages as follows:
1. The age of outburst (or pioneers).

2. The age of conquests.

3. The age of commerce.

4. The age of affluence.

5. The age of intellect.

6. The age of decadence.

7. The age of decline and collapse.

Life has gotten expensive because the standard of living is so much higher. You didn't have cable TV, the internet, HDTV, or two cars for the family. You could save quite a bit if you lived like you were in the 1950s

Haven't had cable in over a year. We got our hdtv 4 years ago. We have internet because well it is essential to paying bills and it's our only entertainment. We have one car. I've applied for dozens of jobs and heard back from a total of one.

The average salary in 1950 was around 3500 dollars. Today it's, generously, around 30,000. That's a factor of ten.

Gas in 1950 was 20 cents a gallon, today 4 dollars. Factor of twenty. That factor can be applied to food and everything else affected by gas. Like I said, the cost of living has gone up twice as much as wages. Before iphones and big screen TV's, it's twice as expensive to simply live today.

And on top of that, in the fifties you bought shit and owned it. Now most income goes to debt.
