And because that one cop said that Joe performed his "legal obligation" and not his "moral obligation" which was not his place to do.

A cop in State College trying to protect the immortal Joe Pa? I'm SHOCKED!!

Anyone involved with children on any level should be a mandated reporter, to the police.

The cop wasn't protecting him. He was damning him. Then the Penn. governor echoed it. Nobody was protecting Paterno.

I'm not saying this to be mean, but I think you need to read up on the case some more.

Wow. What a hero. That was a total blow off move to try to massage his conscience.

No one is claiming he was a hero in this case. Even Joe said that he wished he had done more. He acknowledged his mistake even though he had certainly fulfilled his legal obligations.

The real problem here is the people that want to canonize him and demonize him, when I think he acted the way a lot of people would have.

So if someone reports an incident to you, all you care about is if your ass is covered and you could care less about what was really happening under your watch. I can see you were hired for your leadership qualities.

But by your logic Ru should have followed up on it.

It is easy to follow up on that. Is the fire out? Yes. Done.

And yes, if you call the police, and leave assuming something will get fixed and don't follow up on your report, then you have done something misguided. Is it anywhere near to what the offender has done? No. But just assuming that everything is right because you called the cops is a bit naive.

so, your comment was just for this case
which was my first question (maybe second if you are picky)
GHERU wrote:really?
is that just for this case or any time anyone reports a crime to the proper authorities?

what if it burned out on its own?
did the cops come and say don't do it again?
If they do it again because the cops never came, is it my fault if the house burns down?

if he's villain #3 because he reported it and didn't follow up am I a villain if the house burns down?
basically, how much responsibility should a citizen reporting a crime have once it has become a matter for the police?

A more valid comparison would be if your neighbors started a fire in your basement, and after calling the cops, you never bothered to go in your basement again.

He was damning him when the case broke. To cover his ass a bit. Why did it take 10 years for the cop to come out in public?

You guys are just being naive. College football is a dirty business. Remember Christian Peters?

No, I wasn't hired for my crime-fighting skills or my skills at investigating rape charges. I would report it, as I am required, and then allow the proper authorities to do their jobs. Would I be interested in the outcome? Sure, I would, but I'm usually pretty busy doing my own job.

I'll ask you - how much responsibility does some one who reports a crime have?
will it encourage reporting or discourage reporting if people are held accountable for NOT following up with the cops?

How do you know it burned out on its own if you don't follow up? If you call the cops and they don't come then you just throw your hands in the air and say "Oh well, durp de durp derp!" You don't call the police supervisors and ream them out?
