Laura Bush-she looked great. I don't know what it was but her hair, her face, she looked good. She did her introductions well and has really grown in confidence on the stage. SHe continues to be like 3 times as popular as her husband. In a short appearance I give her a 9/10
GWB-It was a fine speech for him and he sold the point home about McCain and terror/Iraq. He was good. funny. Personable. and short. 7.5 of 10. Being on a tv screen live from the White House hurt it a bit. But we have to play the game and pretend like we are actually handling the fizzled out Hurricane or else the media will get hysterical.
Fred Thompson-Who the hell was this guy? This was the guy who put me to sleep when he was running? Who looked like he didn't have a clue why he wanted to be president? He was awesome telling McCain's life story, doing some Obama attacking, and delivering his speech-which was long but interesting. He really made you feel McCain's history. I could not help being tugged by the heart by this speech and come out of it admiring McCain and feeling more connected to him than i ever did. 9.5 of 10. His accent really helped as well.
Lieberman-featured speech of the night-his delivery wasn't great but it was the best he could do. He made a real effort to reach out to undecided moderates and democrats. He supports McCain, despite being a democrat, because (1) McCain reaches across party lines and we need to heal party divisions, (and he said Obama has shown no signs of that in their personal dealings) (2) McCain is a man of character and conviction and means what he says and will do what he says (implicitly, Obama is too unknown to know this about); and (3) war on terror/Iraq/homeland security. Which echoes what Bush was saying. 7 of 10.
Theme-John McCain history shows him as a man of honor, character, and conviction, willing to buck the establishment and his own party, even the President, when he believed it right to do so. and he's a tough guy who will keep America safe in troubled times.
A good night, albeit without the celebrity and show aspects the Democrats were able to achive.
and losing a night of the convention due to the Hurricane hurts. as does not having Arnold due to the California budget problems. Arnold blew the roof off the place in 2004. and people like him.
I watched from 730 to 11. You can really tell the difference between the big names up there and the smaller names who spoke earlier (i watched on CSpan so i could actually hear it). Those smaller dudes simply are not, and unlikely to ever be, ready for prime time.
