They've all been mediocre at best, so it wouldn't be hard for this to be the best.

Like I said, jon isn't the first person to claim Hawkeye is the weakest Avenger and not in this movie much, whilst you originally said he'd be in the film as much as the "Big 3".

Hawkeye is a lead in the movie, so is Black Widow. They aren't supporting characters. Renner wouldn't sign on unless he was being used just as much as the big 3.

apparently I made some stupid comment that I don't even remember claiming that Hawkeye will in the movie as much as the big 3.

Mind you I still say when it comes to all the characters in the movie, Hawkeye is very much a Whedon character. (like a Wash or Xander type)

A film like the X-men had a tighter script, and the story served the larger purpose.

The Avengers feels more like a series of moments that never quite come together for an epic film. There is never a true "hero" moment or any time that you feel the characters are really risking it all (bar one).

The preview would also lead you to believe that the invasion is the huge part of the story. You would be wrong.

Their identity has nothing to do with the plot. They could have been any alien race in there and it would have made no difference.

It was the Chitauri, the Ultimate Universe's Skrulls. Except they don't do any shapeshifting that we're aware of. They're seriously just cannon fodder.
