I pre-ordered Ghost Story (and Grant Morrison's Supergods) from the Swedish online retailer from which I usually purchase stuff. These books are paid for. They just haven't arrived because, and I quote, "They are sold out at the supplier." I complained about this, of course, explaining that I spend rather a lot of money with their company and that I pre-ordered the books because I wanted them on the day of release. I was out in town yesterday and saw both titles at the Sci-Fi and Fantasy bookstore, but couldn't buy them as I already had copies for which I had paid. I told them this too.

I just got an email saying sorry, that there was nothing they could do but would I please accept a discount code for 29 SEK ($4.50). Said code is not useable with sale items or in conjunction with any other discount. Needless to say, they have been sent a pretty angry response.

I thought I wasn't going to get mine, I pre-ordered last year but I changed my bank card since then. Luckily it did arrive on Tuesday.

I am about halfway done with Ghost Story, and I AM enjoying it, so don't think I am complaining when I say this, but I realized something yesterday.

Butcher has done something with this book I have never seen done before in a book. In a book series... He has written a clip show. You see them all the time on TV, but in PRINT? I didn't even know you could do it, but not only has he, he's done it so well, I don't really mind!

Clip shows usually show parts of episodes already seen. This is flashbacks we have never seen before. :smt017

BAMF!

It also made me think Butcher read the novel "Jumper" back in the day, where the main character learns to start throwing a punch or an attack right before he teleports behind an enemy.

Some of them are, yes. And a huge portion of this, in the guise of Ghost Harry reflecting on his past choices, has been Butcher recalling much of the series. Oh, man I remember when I had to do this to fight that bassist, or man, I remember when I took in this apprentice and did this, etc.

Like I said, its not a bad thing. In fact, it almost comes across as a good jumping on point for NEW readers because of it...

Holy cow. Forget the comic references, he just quoted the "classic blunders" dialogue from Princess Bride!

Well, Butcher just addressed what I thought was the biggest logical flaw in the book so far;
[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
Harry's inability to use magic as a ghost. Since magic is knowledge (memory), energy and will, and ghosts are nothing but the same, he should be shitting out magic. I was about to rail against this when Harry finally purchased a clue.

Speaking of which, I finished reading his Spider-Man novel last week. Not bad! :)

There was one nitpick I had that bugged me though. There's a subplot in it where MJ, in order to have a certain role in a play in Jersey, has to get a car to get there regularly, and she doesn't have a license. So Peter helps her study, teaching her. Now, Spidey has consistently been portrayed as never learning to drive, that wasn't something Bendis made up for New Avengers, and I would have thought Butcher, with all of his Spidey love, woulda known that....

...of course he's one of us. To create a series featuring all the shit it has, I'm surprised Jim's nerd cred is even in question.

Oh it's hasn't been in question with me ever. It's just Ghost Story contains the most nerd pop culture names drops I've ever seen Jim do.

Jack Burton? Buckaroo Banzai, Kenobied, Bamf it's a nerd schmorgesborg.

I hope we see a less brash Harry after this.
