Can anyone explain why most of the great current metal bands come from Europe? It's hard to find anything from America. I guess the metal scene over here is dead.

classic heavy metal is still acceptable to the masses in Europe. Especially the shit that ties into the European heritage. In America is hip hop.

The argument I always hear from people on why they don't listen to metal music is that all metal bands do is scream and shout. They also don't like that "wild" guitar playing.

Most people listen to metal for screaming guitars and great playing.

The popular shit is all rhythm in the US, all bass, drums, rhythm and hip hop beats. Meh, I get bored with that.

True. I remember seeing Alice Cooper stuff in the 80's and wondering how it was ever considered over the top.

And I honestly say the same thing now about Maiden and Priest. The looks are metal, but listening to them, what seems to now be "defined" as metal doesn't even match.

But they're still damn incredible to listen to.

The fast chugging riffs are pure metal, and the wailing vocals, much of what is metal today is directly traceable to Priest, and to a slightly smaller degree Iron Maiden. Sabbath made it heavy, but Priest stripped the Blues away and made it metal. Vocally there are the genre's with harsh growls but the music still points back to Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Motorhead.

If you mean American metal maybe, but much of that is more hip hop than real metal. Korn and crap like that.

There is no doubt that Sabbath, Maiden and Priest are the fathers of metal. All metal bands owe their dues to them. The question is if any of those three bands came out today sounding like that would they be classified as metal? Maiden probably would. Maybe Priest. I don't know. I'm no expert on the matter.

Those bands, well not Sabbath but Heaven & Hell which is Dio era Sabbath, still release albums and they are still metal. For metal you pretty much have to ignore the American metal "scene". There isn't one. There is a metalcoreish screamo scene, which I can't stand but for classic true metal you have to turn to Europe and overseas.

Buying my ticket to Wacken Open Air in Germany next summer. 75k+ screaming metal fans listening to the offspring of those bands, and hopefully those bands as well since the lineup is just barely announced.

well Heaven & Hell are done since Dio is dead but still.

Yeah, you're right. Those bands are still metal. If there first albums were released today and nobody knew who Sabbath or Priest were would they consider them metal?

That metal festival sounds like fun. Maybe someday I'll get my ass to one. It would help if I had the money too. :-(

That was pretty cool. Can you keep it strictly to "real" metal next time? :-D
