PDH wrote:Yes, Avatar is inspired by anime. So what? The question was not, 'which of these properties is the most original?' The question was which is the best and the answer to the question is Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Without Natalie Portman's father's ballsack we wouldn't have Natalie Portman. But that doesn't mean that the ballsack of Natalie Portman's father is better than Natalie Portman.

Let's see...

Senses shattering weigh in OHer's!

Which is better or which do you like more? Can you tell the difference PDH? He said nothing about best, but again, how is it better or best when it's heavily derived?

As for your attempt at a strawman -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natalie_Portman
Portman was born in Jerusalem, Israel.[8][9][10] She is the only child of Shelley (née Stevens), an American homemaker who works as Portman's agent, and Avner Hershlag, an Israeli citizen who is a fertility specialist and gynecologist

Okay, so comparing her father, not her mother, neither of which are actors, to an actor and saying which is the best at acting... when the comparison posed by Hunter is a North American cartoon compared to three anime franchises, all of them tv shows... yeah that makes so much sense.

Compare orange to stone much on taste there? :P  Oh but actor>fertility specialist and gynecologist>house wife. :P

You failed.

S.F. Jude Terror wrote:The basest argument I've ever heard from PDH, but the most awesome.

Like I said, folks are going to go the way I pointed out. Not an anime watcher, they'll favor LA over the anime period. So all he did was an awesome fail as his analogy was incredibly poor to the point that it did not work at all, mine stands as it works. Mine based in reality, his baseless as it failed to note the facts of not only his attempted analogy but also of the shows involved.

Liked best? Always a personal call.
Best in a quality? A call made on fact, not fictions or personal tastes.

True! They're made for a mass appeal. Not much on intelligent story, lots on familiar formula and cliche.
Naruto and Dragonball are published as manga via Shonen Weekly. Same with some other popular shows.

I have to agree with some people here, just because avatar came later/or derived from DBZ, Naruto, and gundam, it can never be better than them is pretty silly. It's like saying there can never be a better fantastic four story coz stan lee/kirby made them and every story is just derived from them. I can respect what they made, but that doesn't mean, I can't put the waid/byrne era ahead of them.
and speaking of DB/DBZ I watch them as a kid,(being in the philippines, I can relate to the Asian culture thing) and man oh man, was it stretched out. remember when goku died and took him several episodes to run the snake road thingie, or how long goku arrived at piccolo's planet. Not to mention the plot was always the same. Goku is strong, so they need a stronger enemy, here comes freeza, so goku has to go supersaiyan, to avoid being boring they need a stronger opponent here comes cell/majjin buu etc.... so goku has to go super saiyan 2,3,4.
I always thought when I was a kid, what if majjin buu came when goku was a kid, then no one can stop him. It is a pretty lucky coincidence that his foes came in a certain order.

I don't even see it as a comparison.

DBZ is almost unwatchable to an adult. It's just really stupid.

Naruto as a anime was pretty good until the non-stop filler started but it never recovered. Even then I wouldn't think it was better than avatar.

Never watched Gundam.

Avatar simply is one of the best cartoons ever. It is beautifully animated (way better looking that the 3 cartoons compared to it), has some wonderful characters who are realistic and consistent within that universe, and has some genuine humor that will age as well as the show. Was it inspired by anime? Sure, but honestly it took a market that is 97% drek and mined the very best of it.

Now compare The Last Airbender to a good anime, like Cowboy Bebop and you might have a fight on your hands.

It seems odd to knock A:TLA as derivative given how derivative Gundam, DBZ, and Naruto are. Gundam is Star Wars with big robots (even the creator says as much). DBZ and Naruto are both typically shonen manga/anime. Each had elements that made them unique from the works they were derived from, but the same could be said of A:TLA. It's also an extremely narrow argument which ignores the actual content of the shows and their subjective worth.

Personally, I don't like to state that something is "better" than something else, because it's based entirely on my own subjective opinion which others do not share. If I had to say which show I enjoyed the most, it would be A:TLA. It had a tighter story, more relatable characters (to me, as an American), and a more consistent quality of animation. DBZ and Naruto are both enjoyable, but there is a ton of filler, even in DBZ Kai. The original Gundam was an amazing accomplishment at the time, and still holds up fairly well today. It also benefits from having a tight story structure (a benefit of not being adapted from a manga). Still, I've tended to enjoy A:TLA more on subsequent viewings than I have Gundam, if just because the individual episodes tend to be more entertaining than individual episodes of Gundam. The Newtype stuff got pretty silly as well.

Why does the fact that it's influenced by anime mean that anime is better, Cat? You've just completed avoided the issue.

As for your attempt at a strawman -

A strawman? Did you or did you not claim that DBZ is better than Avatar because Avatar was 'derived' from it?

That is your argument, stated accurately.

Okay, so comparing her father, not her mother, neither of which are actors, to an actor and saying which is the best at acting... when the comparison posed by Hunter is a North American cartoon compared to three anime franchises, all of them tv shows... yeah that makes so much sense.

You failed.

Actually, I compared her to a ballsack, which does even less acting. Plus, I never said the ballsack was a better actor. I didn't specify in which capacities it was better. For example, it's plainly better when it comes to producing semen. But it's not better than Natalie at cum-production because it chronologically preceded her, it's better because its an organ that evolved for that purpose .

This is the kind of pointless conversation you get into when you nitpick. Go-nowhere pedantry competitions. A better discussion to have would be:

What's your point?

Analogies are there to illustrate points, they're not evidence of anything. The point I was making is fairly obvious: the fact that Avatar draws on anime in no way diminishes its quality or suggests that anime is superior. It's irrelevant.

Do you have an argument that would refute this?

Like I said, folks are going to go the way I pointed out. Not an anime watcher, they'll favor LA over the anime period. So all he did was an awesome fail as his analogy was incredibly poor to the point that it did not work at all, mine stands as it works. What?

Value is extrinsic. If you like anime that is a fact about your preferences, it's not a fact about anime. Unless you're using the word 'quality' to mean something like, 'the date it was released,' then I'm afraid that qualitative judgements are also extrinsic.

Gundam wins because giant robots can step on the other three combatants.

Vague OPs will be your downfall

Goku would just fire a chi blast at the planet and blow it up.

This is assuming that Aang hasn't used energy bending to take away Goku's energy manipulation abilities, Naruto's ninja magic, and Amuro's Newtype abilities.
