The Near-Apocalypse of '09! Batman Beyond talk!

Postby HNutz » Sun Aug 03, 2008 8:49 pm

Okay, so I bought and watched season 3 of Batman Beyond today! And since I didn't see a Batman Beyond thread on here....

So, general thoughts on Batman Beyond?

Personally, even though I was wary of the idea at first (a Batman in a suit that can fly? Who's not Dick Grayson? Wha..?), I soon became a big fan! Even though it may have started a little slow, I think it got better and better as time progressed. I really like how they twisted around folks like Mr. Freeze and the Joker but weren't afraid to give us new baddies like Inque & Shriek. And I'm glad they were able to end the show (over in JLU, since they didn't really have a "last" episode) years later.

Hmmmm.. question time.

Favorite part of the series? Least favorite part? Thoughts on the Justice League Unlimited and the mentions of "the Near Apocalypse of '09"? The finale over in JLU? Favorite bad guys? Anything else you wanna talk about?

One of my favorite DCUA series! I loved the Terry McGuinness character, he was awesome IMHO. I loved the "Return of the Joker" it was so well done, much more adult than any of the other series. My favorite Batman Beyond appearance though was the Epilouge episode of JLU, that was just cool.

Inque was just a clayface rip.

Inque was a cool villain who had staying power.

Terry was great, but it took time for me to respect him as the next Batman. By the time return of the Joker came around, you saw that terry had pretty much come into his own.

Wasn't a big fan of the JLU episode when it first aired but after repeated viewings I kinda started to dig the final exclamation point it put on Terry's story. It's like, you don't need a Batman who is perpetually on the verge of crazy. Not in the future, I guess. He's turned into a much more balanced Batman. perhaps the Batman Bruce might wish he could have been. I reckon there are some folks who would say, "well then, that ain't Batman."

But I dunno, I reckon, legacies don't always have to put on the same costume and be the exact same dude.

You get this sense that terry is progressing in skill as the series goes on. Which is good.

I'd have liked to see more of the DCU Beyond-verse. Titans Beyond perhaps.

I liked the show a lot but I always felt it owed more to Spider-Man than to Batman.

I loved batman Beyond. It nicely tied together the gritty street level crime with the technology of the future. I also really enjoyed that Bruce Wayne was the mentor to the new Batman.

I just like every villain on that show usually got a gruesome end save for the Royal Flush Gang.

I was impressed that they built up Derek Powers as the "Luthor" of Batman Beyond... and then killed him off at the end of the first season, instead of having him wear out his welcome, so to speak.

It was fun today, because some of the season 3 episodes were new to me. Or it'd been SO long, I couldn't remember what happened. Like the Talia episode, for example...

This is one of the animated DC shows I grew up on when it was new, and it does rock. I absolutely love it.

I always wished they did a Batman Beyond comic series in the DCU.

That is my hope as well. However, I have always gotten the sense that the powers that be at DC were too concerned about how it would fit into current continuity, or how it would fit into the 52 concept.

I say fuck all that horseshit and just put the goddamn Batman Beyond comic into our hands.
