The Old Doctor

Benedict Cumberbatch?

He was offered it once before but chose instead to play some detective in 21st century London... but could he be given a second choice? Would it work?

Image

Martin Freeman?

Maybe if not the one Baker Street detective, but maybe the other?

Image

Damian Lewis?

So far one of the rumored potential Doctors, other than the regular "It'll be a woman! It'll be a black guy!" rumors.

Image

John Hurt?

Well, it is being speculated by some that this is a sneaky way of bringing in a new Doctor. Perhaps a new wrinkle for the Doctor? Would it work, given that he's playing The Doctor Who Failed The Promise Of The Name?

Well, we've got six months to figure it out, scoop the planet and piss off the BBC.

Someone told me months ago it was going to be David Morrissey. I could almost see it, but I don't like it.

It's not going to be Cumberbatch or Freeman. To even suggest that is moronic. After the Hobbit and Star Trek, these two are going to be in high demand in Hollywood.

And it's not going to be Damian Lewis... why would he take a step backwards? He's coming off a pretty huge "serious" show in Homeland, and his role might not be done on it for all we know. It'd be kind of limiting for him to go do Doctor Who now. Popular as it may be, it's still a niche show.

And I don't think it'll be Hurt, although I can see him being the new River Song-ish mystery character for Moffat to work with here and there.

I see no reason to assume it wouldn't be a fresh face, given the direction Moffat went in with Smith.

Just for shits and giggles, though, I'm still hanging my hat on Paterson Joseph. :D

Dude's going to be on The Walking Dead for a while... I don't see it happening.

I doubt it. He already played "The Doctor" in the 2008 special "The Next Doctor." The show runners have shown that they don't really have a problem reusing actors for different roles but I doubt that they would do this. Not saying that he would do a bad job, it would certainly be interesting, just considering the nature of the special he was in it might be a little confusing.

I'd like to see Rupert Grint, but I doubt it would happen, and it would be too much of a self-fulfilling meme.

Haven't seen this show, but aren't Freeman and Cumberbatch doing one or two more years of Sherlock also after their current projects?

It's a big part so I (mostly) trust they'll get it right. Finally got around to watching Sherlock and I think he'd have made a really good Baker-like Doctor. I'd be genuinely surprised if they kept it a white Doctor considering the recent criticism of the show. I'd be ok with a Mexican Doctor. "Sombrero's are cool!"

Heh, I actually thought of him, too.

It'll be someone we've never heard of, just like Smith was.

That would be best.

Cumberbatch would be insane to make that particular career move.

Undoubtedly, but the conjecture is half the fun. Personally, I would like to see the Doctor get a bit older again.
