Day 111.

I finished the Best of Vader vol. 1 DVD from IVP today. Quite the epic ending, to say the least.

First up was Vader vs. Tatsumi Fujinami. This match was unique in that Vader didn't dominate it. In fact, Fujinami dominated large portions of it and in some points manhandled Vader! Immediately popping to mind is a hip-toss Fujinami performs on Vader in earlier part of the match. Vader still managed the win, though. Ignoring that though, I must comment on what is easily the greatest spot in pro wrestling history. Vader is a bloody mess in the ring and the ref grows concerned that he just can't continue. The ref holds back Fujinami while the doctor enters the ring to check on Vader. As the doctor walks up to Vader, Vader promptly kicks him away. A great, great, GREAT moment!

Next up was Vader vs. Antonio Inoki. This was more your typical Vader match with Vader dominating and the smaller Inoki trying to outsmart him. For the most part, Vader just destroys Inoki in this match. My favorite part is when Vader just casually throws a table on Inoki. As the match progresses Vader throws everything at Inoki. A chokeslam, Vader Bomb, Vadersault, etc. but Inoki refuses to stay down. Then Inoki catches Vader out of nowhere with a powerslam and follows up with a cross arm breaker for the submission victory. Kind of out of nowhere but perfectly sensible, really.

Match of the Day goes to Vader vs. Antonio Inoki.

I don't think I've ever seen either of those. They do sound great.

Good to see TAKA back in it. How long has Tiger Mask IV been around? 1996?

I would like to see Liger make a run at winning the tournament before he retires, if that ever happens.

Went to a World League Wrestling (Harley Race's school) event in my home town of Sedan, KS, tonight and got to see the ring debuts of both Ross and Marshall Von Erich, managed by Kevin Von Erich, and it was a Hell of a time. I hope, as a crowd, we gave them something to really remember. Ross did a couple of really pretty Springboard Cross-Body Blocks but Marshall carried most of the match. The bad guys cheated to win and I guess they're having a rematch tomorrow somewhere in Missouri. It was cool to see what I hope to be the start of two really promising careers. NOAH from Japan were there and taped it and are supposedly aired the footage live.

Nice field, Stephen. I love how it's like a video game thing.

He's been around about that long I think. It's funny that we're still only on Tiger Mask IV, while the current Black Tiger is the seventh

Yeah, it's amazing that he can still perform at the level he does at his age.

I'm glad to hear they looked good. Since I heard they were in training in NOAH's dojo I've wondered how good they were going to look in the ring.

Let's hope they don't have anywhere near the same problems that their other family members had.

I think it'll be an interesting tournament this year -- lot's a guys making their BOSJ debut:

BUSHI
Low Ki
Black Tiger VII
PAC
Daisuke Sasaki
Alex Kozlov
Angel de Oro

There's a bit of an unknown factor when it comes to how most of them will be used in the tournament. Low Ki is the only one that I think I can say with certainty will be up there in the standings during the round robin portion.

Photos from the Von Erich Debut...

In the one where Ross is kicking the other guy, I'm the guy with his hands up for a clap, otherwise totally obscured by Von Erich's leg...

Day 112.

Today I watched Halloween Havoc '90, which might be something of an underrated gem.

The show opens with Ricky Morton/Tommy Rich vs. the Midnight Express. This is notable for being the final Midnight Express match in WCW. It's not the absolute classic that the match with the Southern Boys was on the previous PPV, but it's a good, fact, energetic bout. They do a good job of drawing the crowd in as Rich goes over after using the racquet.

Next up is the Freebirds vs. Renegade Warriors. Less said the better.

Then we get the Steiners vs. Nasty Boys. This is just an epic brawl from start to finish. The Nasties utilize their roughneck, brawling while the Steiners are your type American Strong Style badasses. I probably would have had the Nasties go over here, but Scott finishes Knobbs off with a vicious Frankensteiner.

To continue the tag series we get Ric Flair/Arn Anderson vs. Doom. This match is borderline excellent. It starts off with Doom manhandling Flair and Anderson, but then the Horsemen work over Simmons for an extended period. The match is all kinds of good but ends on a double countout, unfortunately.

Next we veer away from tag action with Stan Hansen vs. Lex Luger. This match isn't that great and Stan Hansen winning the United States Championship is kind of anticlimactic.

The main event is Sting vs. Sid Vicious. It's a decent match but the ending is stupid. Sting and Sid brawl up the aisle and when they come back, Sting lifts Sid for a slam but Sid lands on Sting to get the pin. BUT WAIT~! It wasn't Sting! Sting comes back and the match continues with Sting getting the win to retain. A Fake Sting angle in 1990? Geez, talk about foreshadowing. Turns out it was Barry Windham.

Match of the Day goes to Ric Flair/Arn Anderson vs. Doom.
