so I finished dune, now I'm reading dune Messiah

also I watched the movie dune for the 1st time over the weekend

I don't understand 1. Why people say the movie's terrible 2. why people say it's such a terrible adaptation of the book yeah the ending is dumb and nonsensical but overall it's pretty close to the book I mean besides some design choices. I dunno I thought it was a pretty good movie and the production valves, set design, costume design and direction were really solid

I've only read the first Dune book and it was ages ago. I can't remember most of it.

the book's better and there's a lot of stuff left out in the movie but that's always the way it is with book adaptations

I refuse to watch the movie, because I love the books so much. I don't want my vision of those characters and that universe tainted by somebody else's vision. But that's just my choice.

Keb wrote:They don't have to, they just do so you don't have to get it or use the hands-free dryer. It's probably easier to get handed a towel by some guy when you are drunk than to reach for one. Plus it allows the restrooms to stay relatively cleaner because people are not taking too many paper towels and throwing them on the floor. They also stop people from having sex in the bathrooms.

They used to have dudes like that in fancy public washrooms waaaaaay back in the day. They would hand you a cloth towel, sometimes turn on the tap and shit. They would dust off your suit and make sure you looked good. They were usually black guys (this is before the Civil Rights movement but I'm sure they were around after for a while). If you've ever read Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, there's a monologue from a guy whose father was a bathroom attendant. In the film version it's done by Frankie Faison.

Now that you mention the sex part everything makes sense.
And yeah, I think this was much common in the past, personally, I wouldn't demand to have a guy handing me a towel.

The movie has special agent Dale Cooper, so it wins points for that

I got my dad to read 1984 recently. He's one of those super conservative Glenn Beck viewing Republican party fanboys so he loved it for probably all the wrong reasons, but its cool we have a book to talk about that's not the bible
