The Passion of the Christ

Postby Doc Jon » Mon Apr 09, 2012 6:27 am

Seeing as how they enact passion plays in the Philippines (including actually nailing people to a cross) at this time of year, and just seeing the South Park episode about this movie, I just thought I'd start a thread about it.

I can't believe that people defend this movie with the fervor that they use considering it is possibly the most popular piece of torture porn ever created.

I thought it was a terrible FILM myself. It really had no plot except that some guy gets snatched and then tortured for the next two hours. SInce I pretty much dislike all torture porn films (including Saw and Hostel and whatnot) I guess it's no surprise that I didn't like this.

I have not seen it. I would probably like it. Why do they call it "passion?" Isn't passion like when you're in love and have sex and stuff?

The word has several definitions. In the context of the New Testament, it refers to Christ's suffering, martyrdom and rebirth.

I'm not religious, but I enjoyed the movie. I didn't find it nearly as gruesome as I was led to believe.

I did leave hating the Jews, though.

Yes, yes that's the only definition of the word. That's why I never understood why black people are called "colored". Isn't "colored" like when you use Crayons on a piece of paper?

You can't be serious? They can't possibly actually nail someone to a cross with nails through the hands and feet and shit. That can cause permanent damage!

I don't think the actors were actually nailed to crosses, though the effects work is super-explicit. I'm pretty sure Jim Caviezel was struck by lightning during filming, however.

Completely serious. And the same guy usually plays the role for years.

Yes, it's 3rd world and people look down on that.

But let me tell you, people truly believe. Not that convenient "sure I go to Sunday once in a while" shit. I'm talking hard core belief. I generally find the faith of people in more "developed" countries to be laughable at times when they talk about being tested and shit. MOST of them have no fucking clue what true hardship is.

However, given how much hate religions can generate being "hard core" about it can be a terrible thing. How many innocent people have paid the price at the hands of the "hard core" faithful? No, I think I'll take the Religious Lite of America over the crazy zealots in other parts of the world thank you very much.
