x-posted in the Godzilla thread..

Book Celebrates Centennial of Famed Godzilla Director!

For the first time outside Japan a book has been published on Japan's foremost director of Fantasy Films: “MUSHROOM CLOUDS AND MUSHROOM MEN – The Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda” (AuthorHouse, ISBN: 978-1-4490-2771-1).

MUSHROOM CLOUDS AND MUSHROOM MEN is the first book to cover in English print Honda’s life as well comprehensively evaluates all 25 of his fantasy films. It is also gives objective and critical analysis of Honda's filmmaking methods, themes and relationships with actors and technicians.

Making use of extensive interviews from Honda’s colleagues as well as a wealth of original source material never before gathered into one volume (including previously-unpublished essays) and nominated in 2009 for a “Rondo Award,” MUSHROOM CLOUDS AND MUSHROOM MEN is an affectionate tribute to the most-prolific and influential director in the history of fantasy films.

2012 Film Unites 200 Super Sentai/Rangers & 40 Kamen Riders

Next spring, the tentatively titled Super Hero Taisen (Super Hero War) film will assemble about 200 heroes — from every team in the live-action special-effects Super Sentai franchise — and about 40 Kamen Riders from the four-decade-long Kamen Rider franchise. This will be the first time that so many Super Sentai members and so many Kamen Riders have co-starred in the same film. Director Osamu Kaneda will begin shooting the film in late December, and Toei will release the film during the Golden Week holidays next year.

2012 Super Sentai/Power Rangers Show Revealed

Product solicitation sheets from the toy conglomerate Bandai reveal that Tokumei Sentai Gobusters, the newest live-action Super Sentai television series, will premiere on February 26 in Japan. The various Super Sentai projects are the source material for the international Power Rangers franchise.

The new series begins with three heroes: Red Buster, Blue Buster, and Yellow Buster. Their Buster Machines — the cheetah-transforming Gobuster Ace, Gorilla, and Rabbit — combine to form Gobuster O, for which Bandai is making a 310-millimeter-tall (about 12.2-inch-tall) toy. To transform themselves, the heroes have a Buster Gear called Morphin' Brace with pop-up sunglasses.

The heroes also have "Buddyroids" — Chida Nick, Gorisaki Banana, and Usada Lettuce — that transform into the heads of their respective Buster Machines. (The Buddyroids' names are references to the food eaten by the animals that inspired the Buster Machines' alternate modes; niku is the Japanese word for meat.)

Life Is Dead Manga Gets Film About Unemployable Zombie

A live-action film adaptation of Tomohiro Koizumi's zombie manga Life Is Dead will open in Japan next spring. The story is set in a provincial Japanese city in the near future, as an undead virus rapidly spreads and turns humans into the "walking dead." A young man named Akaboshi becomes a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) who cannot land a job — thanks to being infected with the virus before his high school graduation. The manga and the film follow Akaboshi's final days with his family, lover, and friends.
