"Evangelion" Creator Hideaki Anno Names His 5 Favorite Tokusatsu Shows
the legendary fan of the genre has taken the opportunity to share a list of his five favorite tokusatsu works - based on their cultural significance and his own emotional attachment:

1. Godzilla (1954 )
Anno remembers seeing a screening of the original Godzilla film just after graduating highschool and feels that this, the original Japanese kaiju movie, is still the great monster movie of all time.

While none of the original Godzilla costumes were well enough preserved to be used in the exhibit, it will still feature the fearful "Oxygen Destroyer."

2. Mighty Jack (1968)
A sci-fi spy show which Anno fondly recalls from his elementary school days as "extremely cool." English language fans might remember the Sandy Frank localization being spoofed in MST3K.

Only 40% of the series' famous battleship remained intact, but it was able to be restored using the same techniques with which it was originally built.

3. Ultraman (1966)
4. Ultra Seven (1967)
5. Return of Ultraman (1971)

I think it was really only supposed to go to 12 episodes. I haven't seen it yet (but read about it), but it seems 13 is sort of a parody of the clip-type shows sentai does have.

Now we are both in pain. However, pain is power!

Space Sheriff Gavan: The Movie Announced for October Premiere

It was revealed on Saturday that the Toei Space Sheriff Gavan tokusatsu series would receive a film titled Space Sherriff Gavan: The Movie. The original Space Sheriff Gavan series was the first title in Toei's Space Sheriff line of television shows, and aired from 1982 to 1983.

Yuma Ishigaki will star in the film as Geki Jumonji alongside Kenji Ohba, who reprises his role as Retsu Ichijouji, the protagonist of the original Gavan. Ohba also played the role of Retsu in Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger vs. Space Sheriff Gavan: The Movie, which premiered earlier this year.

Space Sherriff Gavan: The Movie is slated to open in Japanese theaters October 20.
