Zimmerman will get to stand before a judge on the "stand your ground" defense prior to a jury trial, the charges could still be dismissed.
If they're going for murder though they must have some pretty damning evidence that we haven't seen or heard yet.
You don't get the needle in Florida for 2nd degree murder, but, life imprisonment is still on the table.

They may have some damning evidence against him, but the other option for why they went ahead with it was revealed in her press release, when she felt it necessary to deny that public pressure made her charge him. Which of course sort of confirms that public pressure was at least part of the reason why she charged him, if not the entire reason.
I doubt she wants death threats herself.
Reading what constitutes proving second degree murder in Florida---it sounds like in this case at least, it will be almost impossible to prove, unless they have him confessing. Frankly, unless there absolutely is some huge unreleased evidence, under normal circumstances, they wouldn't have a prayer of convicting him for that.
But then of course these aren't normal circumstances; and it will be almost impossible for Zimmerman to get a fair trial, since the press, liberals, and the black community have already convicted him, absent any evidence.
