3DS is pretty dominant in Japan.

They are updating it So it can be a little more capable, a bit more robust, slightly bigger screens, direct amiibo support, a c-stick + z triggers. If you watch the direct, you'll see new bundles will be offerred with Monster Hunter 4U and Smash Bros (which makes you think, yes that is why they added the c stick and extra buttons).

It will fragment the 3DS market a bit, but it is not THAT new of a thing. See Gameboy Advance, DSi.

Well obviously to make money.

However, like you mentioned, it's going to create a stack of games that a large majority of 3DS owners will not be able to play and I really doubt a lot of people are going to update their 3DS either.

That's the strategy and gamble Nintendo is taking. Also as mentioned, it's happened before.

If I were to guess, I'd say that no game with "3DS" on the package would be unplayable with an older 3DS. Just like with the Wii and Wii U, they'll just have different controller options. You could play Xenoblade Chronicles with a Wiimote and Nunchuk, for example. Of course, you SHOULD have played it with the Classic Controller attachment, but you had the option of playing it with the out-of-box set-up.

Same here. People with the newer systems will have the advantage because a C-stick is awesome but people with the older systems will still have a controller option that will make the games functional... if not exactly ideal.

But that's just a guess.

Does anyone happen to know how to fix, if this is fixable, a game system that won't play the disk? It's in, but it doesn't play. The system itself hasn't suffered any damage whatsoever and has been stationary since purchase. Any suggestions? Could it have burnt out somehow? Is it just time to get a knew one?

It's certainly a helpful page, but some of the steps require one to know the ins and outs of a PS3, willing to take it apart to check on functioning of parts, and having blu-ray or DVD disks to troubleshoot. Perhaps I'll bring it to one of those video game corner stores? But I can't say I have a lot of trust in doing that.
