that was exceptional. The Grand Finale. During the fourth season of Buffy and first of Angel there were a lot more and with maybe one exception--re: Faith--they weren't that critical.

Yeah, I tried to be as vague as I can without any spoilers, just talking mostly on appearances. But I black em out,

I don't want to be negative but I have nothing positive to say about the first the episode.

I'm told that the show "grows a beard" during season 2 so I'm going to try and stick with it.

Okay one negative thing, Xander is the worst he's a terribly written character and that actor is horrible. It saddens me that he doesn't die in episode 2 (I know he's still around in the comic)

As mentioned, the show does Grow The Beard in Season 2, with the emergence of Spike, Drusilla, and Angelus. Even Xander grows in importance and interest in episodes like Season 2's "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", and Season 3's "The Zeppo" (both recommended, by the way).

The series has also made a HUGE footprint at TV Tropes, being the Trope Namer or Trope Maker (or even former Trope Namer; see "Spikeification") for many an entry. The show's page even says that "Buffy fandom is the origin of TV Tropes." Whether you think that's a good thing or not is strictly up to you.

Buffy's having money problems, why couldn't/wouldn't the Watcher's Council give her a stipend or a paycheck? She IS the Slayer, after all...
Any thoughts?

That didn't make sense to me either. "You are the chosen one, now get a job!".

About mid way through season 2, it has gotten a lot better since the pilot.

I'm not sure Whedon has ever interacted with real teenagers nor been to a highschool, but it takes on its own charm in time.

I assume you mean that I'm at the part where Angel loses his soul again?

No I'm not.

But I remember that this happens from catching an episode years ago.

I also know that

oh and Spike doesn't seem very threatening to me. He's supposedly the most feared vampire ever behind Angelus and the Master and he's easily beaten by Buffy then runs away everytime they interact so far. (The Halloween episode had the best/worst example of this).

The master was a better villain truthfully, even the annointed one was okay (even though he went out like a punk). Spike is sorely lacking any kind of success to be considered anything but campy fun at this point.
