Funny you should say that, because I put it on my Netflix queue a couple of weeks ago, and I plan to watch it as soon as I'm done with Star Trek: The Animated Series. (Strict gave me shit for admitting this on Facebook.)
Eh... they should be watched. The Animated stuff was fun.
With ST:E, I watched it a year ago in marathons after not seeing it at all for two years. I went in with a head clear of thinking it was poor or should have been another TNG. I was impressed with it. The premise that this is humanity first getting out there and being at the start of the learning curve and pretty much full of youthful naivety and energy... hubris and having them learn the hard way... evolve as characters... great stuff really. I think like so many back when it was first run, kept expecting and sort of wanting more of the TNG formula and while we got some in recycled episodes, it was really a bad way to watch it.
Strict is a little too hard assed on Trek sometimes, I think.
