They don't explictly show what Rorschach does in the bathroom in either the movie or the book. In both versions, he goes into the bathroom to follow that guy, there's a flushing sound, then when he gets out a trail of blood soon follows. The big difference is in the way the scene is framed, as well as what Rorschach's wearing. He doesn't wear his suit in the book.

I hated the Seth Rogen mall cop trailer. It just didn't look funny to me. Oh well.

I thought UP looked awesome.

Oh, I didn't say it looked good...just better than the Kevin James thing. Which is a low bar to meet.

One area I felt where the movie fell short was in providing context in some places. For example: Why was the Keene Act ever deemed to be necessary? Why did public opinion turn against superheroes? It seemed to just happen, but no explanation as to why. I think some time given to that would have helped (I know, it's strange to say that anything in a two and a half hour movie needs MORE time, but this is Watchmen, after all).

And the fire thing during the love scene? Well, it WAS in the book... and it got a few laughs, so that's not so bad.

Oh and I don't remember who said it, but whoever had a problem with the Up trailer has no sense of fun left in them. That looked hilarious. "Squirrel" made me laugh, and that bird was really goofy looking.

The Public Enemies trailer looked excellent as well. Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in a movie about Dillinger is just tons of win, add in Michael Mann directing and I couldn't be more excited for the movie.

I'm the one who posted a problem with the Up trailer and it has nothing to do with that particular trailer - just it's placement before Watchmen. While I got Up & Race to Witch Mountain - 99% of the rest of America got Star Trek & Public Enemies instead. Action thriller previews belong with action thriller movies. Kid/family trailers belong with kid/family movies imo.

But what the hell - let's reverse this and say that the trailers before the movie 'Up' are Dawn of the Dead and Debbie Does Dallas.

As for trailers...

We didn't have either. We had "Pandorum", the new Terminator, Seth Rogan's "Mall Cop"-ripoff (which'll probably be better than Paul Blart)... and I was in there EARLY. Weird.

Oh yeah, I know what I was going to ask earlier... the stuff with Silhouette and the earlier Watchmen... I didn't think I remembered the lesbian scenes and the asylum folks in the main part of the book, but I found that in the second "Under The Hood" excerpt. I thought the visuals were particularly striking and I was surprised that they didn't really come from the book.

Big items not in the movie that I hope are in the DVD....

The C level characters. The cops, the psychitrist & wife, the news stand guy, the comic book kid, the lock repair guy, the knot-heads, etc. In the movie - it's one thing to kill 80% of New York, but it's impact in the movie was lost on me because there were no characters there for me to have cared about.

Hollis Mason. His death and more importantly Dan's reaction to hearing about the death in the bar was sorely missed.

Bubastis - she looked great. Her prescence wasn't ever explained.

Lines I kept waiting for: "makes me feel so powerless, so impotent", "Did the costumes makes it good?", "I see the world didn't end yesterday - Are you sure", "I ask him what happened to the other 14, and he tells me", "The light is taking me to pieces", the "I needed to take a leak" bathroom bit, "Only once", "Can't. Serious business. Slur on reputation. How much did they they pay you to lie about me, whore?", "Something else I wasn't sure would work", "I DID IT!"


"You're My Thrill" - the songs on the soundtrack - but twhere the heck was it in the movie? I'm a huge Billie Holiday fan BECAUSE I discovered her from reading Watchmen 24 years ago. This song was played at my wedding. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE. Instead we get ANOTHER "Hallelujah" in yet another movie (and while it was Cohen's - even he has stated before that Jeff did it better).

And finally and most importantly - where the hell were the sugar cubes? There's a half dozen scenes in the book with those tiney little morsals - and if they can get the hooker giving Rorchach the finger - they should have gotten at least one sugar cube!

But they were in the book - just not drawn.

Which reminds me - I'm guessing that by his heavy German accent it's 100% fact now (movie version at least) as to who Hooded Justice really was.

As I said in Eltopo's thread, I loved it, it wasn't perfect, but it was as close to Watchmen as we'd ever get.

I actually think a lot of the changes made were appropriate and served to make the story fit better on film. The understated fight scenes may work well on the page, but on screen, you can do more action in a shorter space of time, and Snyder took advantage of this, the action was breathtaking, and I liked the 'slow it down, speed it up' approach, it makes you feel every punch. But I'm not sure it will work as well on dvd, 300 was amazing on the big screen, but on dvd, not as good, you need the big picture to get into this sort of action.

The movie also put the political, cold war stuff more to the forefront, and I liked that, in the book I didn't get the sense that nuclear war was possible at any time, but the movie made sure I did (although Nixon was bizarre, a cartoon, they might as well have got Billy West harrroooo!) The ending was also a good change, it made sense in the context of the movie, and the Squid would have taken too much set up, plus if you look closely, the anagram for the Machine Veidt had is S.Q.U.I.D.

I thought the acting was strong, I don't have the same problems most of you do with Akerman as Silk Spectre, I think she did OK with what she had, which wasn't as much as the other characters, her and Ozymandias didn't have enough scenes, we didn't get to se Veidt as a hero, it was too obvious he was the villain, but Haley was amazing as Rorschach, just straight off the page, as was Wilson as Nite Owl. Morgan was good as the Comedian, but didn't have enough scenes in my eyes. Crudup had a difficult job, and I'm not sure whether I liked it or not yet, but he was impressive at getting emotion across through all the cgi.

Just brilliant fun, I can't wait to see it again.

There were some great trailers before the movie. The Up trailer was much more fleshed out then the first trailer I saw for it.

The slow motion parts in the movie didn't bother me at all. Even if they cut them out, it would probably only make a few minutes difference in the lenght of the movie.

How come Dr. Manhattan's junk is totally flacid (sp?) seconds after doing the nasty with Silk Spectre?

Silk Specter II was definitely a bit wooden at times. Carla Gugino was fine I thought.

I wasn't a big fan of the fight sequences, particularly with Ozymandias. These are supposed to be normal people, without superpowers, but the amped up fight sequences weren't true to that. i.e. kicking a guy who is in mid-air and sending him flying 20 feet? Probably not doable in real life.
