Lonesome Dove was written first and then the author wrote 3 more with the same characters. I read them because I love Lonesome Dove but they are far from necessary.

As soon as I found out Newt dies in the sequel, I decided not to read it, what a waste of a character arc!

I thought Dune was great! Same with the first few sequels. I kinda lost interest by the time I got to Chapterhouse: Dune and never finished it.

The prequels and sequels are not really worth reading, they are merely average and Lonesome Dove is a complete epic. There are also continuity issues between the books, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me because one guy wrote them all.

I just read that a couple months back for the first time. I really enjoyed it I may try a couple of the other Vonnegut books.

When it comes to reading you're never late, I'd say.
