It's based on a Thomas Pynchon novel, Inherent Vice, you should read the book, it's great.

I agree. It's a really enjoyable Pynchon novel. Remarkably readable. Would love if he wrote more crime novels.

Prisoners. Excellent movie with a fantastic, Oscar-worthy performance from Hugh Jackman.

Last night I On-Demanded Pacific Rim. I didn't see it in the theater because it was roundly panned, but then I read an article defending it that made me want to try it. I can see why it was panned, but since I like Kaiju movies, I enjoyed it a lot. It wasn't Shakespeare but then... it's a freakin' Kaiju movie. It's not supposed to be Shakespeare. Frankly I liked it a lot better than Man of Steel.

Pacific Rim was roundly panned?
I thought most people who actually went to see it, liked it. Especially those who appreciated it for what it was.

Only thing I'd pan it for would be hearing Charlie Hunnam speaking in an American accent. I see him and keep expecting to have him sound like Nathan from Queer As Folk. :?

The reviews I read said it was good but unexceptional, which is probably fair. I really liked it, but I'm a sucker for giant robots and shit. One really positive review came from a feminist website because they really liked the Japanese girl and her being pretty much the most interesting character.

Some of the reviews definitely damned it with faint praise, though, it didn't get the kind of reviews that pour gasoline on a fire. Like, "if giant robots are your thing, this is for you. The scant plot and cardboard characters.."

I know what he means, the overall tone by reviewers of not being completely satisfied with the movie definitely influenced my decision not to see it at the time of its release (or yet).
