Which Marvel HC is Best: Ellis Secret Avengers, Schism, USM?

Postby TimDrake'sDumbWings » Thu Mar 29, 2012 10:29 am

Hey, all.

I want to pick up a new Marvel story in HC, but I'm torn between four options (couldn't fit all three in the title):

Ellis' Secret Avengers
Spider-man: Spider Island
Ultimate Spider-man (The Miles Morales stuff)
X-Men: Schism

Which do you recommend? Maybe I'll write a review if y'all are interested?

Schism or USM, probably. I didn't like Ellis' Secret Avengers at all.

Secret Avengers read a little like rejected Global Frequency stories. They were good done in one stories but nothing long term memorable.

Spider-Island was pretty fun.

Schism I haven't read all of it. What little I read of Schism was ok.

USM I haven't touched at all. Last issue I read was mid 80s in the first run.

As a HC? Spider-Island. Schism was meh, Ellis's Secret Avenger stories were a little hit or miss, USM has been good from the few issues I've read, but was moving really slow so I don't know if you'd get your money's worth in an HC.

from that list, USM
SA continued to be a bag of meh
once you know the outcome of schism there's really no need to read it (the whole two teams thing)
I could not imagine reading a whole trade of Ramos' art :smt078

It sounds like the Spider Island love is pretty universal. I haven't read post-OMD Spider story since the Obama issue. Will I understand, or should I pick up Big Time first?

OR if you think there's a recent hardcover/trade that's MORE worth picking up, by all means, recommend!

i'd say Spider Island as well.. Schism is pretty much just set up for the current status quo of the x-men and unless you wanna read that there is really no point.. Spider Island was just good fun

Schism interested me because of the potential of awesome character moments. I saw a few panels from the Davis-drawn Cyke/Wolverine fight where they discuss which of them at the time would terrify Jean more. Is the series rife with moments like that, or is that all there is?

Spider Island was stupid, mindless fun. Possibly the best of the bunch, though I liked Schism. None are really worthy of hardcover, IMO. Trades at best, unless you buy everything in hardcover.

I mean, I'd also be down to save some money and get some good stuff in trade. Any recommendations? I'd like to read some Avengers stories after reading Kree-Skrull War.

There's a really good trade with all Kang stories.

As for the original question, I haven't read any of them but this is my interest in them.
X-Men: Schism (already ordered)
Ultimate Spider-man
Secret Avengers
Spider-man: Spider Island

I had the first two hardcovers and then got pissed with the fact that Marvel was collecting them only 4 issues to an HC for $20. I decided to wait until it gets the inevitable Omnibus or Ultimate Collection treatment.
