White people: explain Tom Waits

Postby Strict31 » Thu Oct 27, 2011 4:14 pm

Black people have little if any experience with Tom Waits, outside of his movie roles perhaps. I've only heard one or two songs by the guy and the first one I heard, I thought it was a joke.

Whiteys are, however, possessed of a slavish devotion to him as a musical icon. We've explained our devotion to rap, hip-hop and big-booty white bitches; now honkeys must explain the appeal of Tom Waits.

He's legit, from the same school of exaggerated blues singers like Screamin Jay or Howling Wolf. And he works frequently with Marc Ribot, one of the best guitarists alive today.

I can't. I think it's one of those things people say they like to try and appear cool.
However, Liefeld is an enigma wrapped in a pouch-filled, muscular, footless conundrum.

He's more of a cult artist than a major force in music. He's not Elvis or anything like that.

A great songwriter who should have gotten someone else to sing his songs.

Lyrics.

And some of the shit he did back in the 60s like getting all those awards and calling all those people at the ceremony out. And also going electric and pissing people off.

I prefer Dylan to Waits.

Personally, I like him because he doesn't sound like anyone else. His albums cover a wide variety of musical styles that are largely ignored in the current milieu of popular music. The instrumentation he uses and the arrangements he creates are incredibly creative. As for Waits himself, his voice isn't polished, but he has a larger than life persona that more than makes up for it. He infuses his songs with personality beyond what anyone else is really capable of.

So, what are you saying; he's like Leon Redbone for hipsters?

the guy is a incredibly gifted song writer and his often time pained vocal delivery really sells what he writes in ways that a lot of other artists can't touch. He's also not afraid to buck convention and is very experiential with his work

Leon Redbone. Best known for his work on the Mr. Belvedere theme song. Bad. Ass.

No. because the unconventionality of his singing and recording was as revolutionary as his songwriting. He brought the true rawness of folk music into rock.
