Batman fighting henchmen is also pretty much a defining characteristic of the character. The comics. The animated. The Adam West show. The Burton movies. The Shumaker *shudder* movies.
I get it. You like the Nolan movies. I don't blame you, they're good movies.
But to trivialize the fighting aspect of Batman is silly. It defines the character. It is a part of the character. This is not to say he can't use his brains or gadgets.
Again, that clip from Sherlock Holmes using his brains AND martial prowess is what Batman SHOULD be. You can say I'm just being argumentative, but I'm not the only one disagreeing with you here...
I'm just glad Nolan didn't make the film you wanted.
Dark Knight > Sherlock Holmes.

And Nolan did have Bruce fight quite a bit. BB and his training was actually done very well.
One might even say that the martial arts training in that movie was essential to the creation of Batman, no? He certainly wasn't using gadgets in those scenes.
The disconnect really happens when he dons the suit. That's when the action scenes and the fights become lame. Again, it may be due to the suit (as Bale couldn't even turn his head until the second movie) but that's still not an excuse.

yup. it wasn't some kung-fu bullshit. he just swooped into some guys, punched some guys, and tossed around some batarangs. It was how batman is almost always shown.
I've always seen Robin as the balance as that. He's got a bo staff, martial arts skills, and is an ex-circus performer. There's a reason he does more kung-fu stuff; because Batman doesn't, and won't.

I've never seen those scenes as Bruce becoming a "badass martial artist" . They were more to establish that Bruce was becoming disciplined and honing his skills in fighting and observation.

He trained with a league of assassins that spent their time bringing down civilizations as ninja... but ok...
