KERMADEC ISLANDS (HawaiiNewsNow) - The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 7.8 magnitude earthquake near the Kermadec Islands at 9:03 a.m. (HST).

The Kermadec Islands are located 570 miles south of Tonga.

According to the USGS, the earthquake was 29.8 miles deep.

According to the Department of Emergency Management, the earthquake poses no threat to Hawaii.

The DEM says coastal areas in Hawaii could experience small non-destructive changes in sea level or unusual currents at about 4 p.m., and may last several hours.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has cancelled the tsunami warning for the Kermadec Islands, Tonga and New Zealand.

Whereabouts does he live? He could be pretty far from it. If he lives around Manila, he'd be very far from it. A bit closer if he lives in Cebu, but still far. Incidentally, the BBC is reporting at least 15 dead with 29 still missing.

Thanks for the concern.

I live an hour or so outside of Manila and didn't even feel it.

So far, nothing serious reported... but two pretty big ones.

2 massive earthquakes rock Indonesia, trigger tsunami warnings

The U.S. Geological Survey said the first 8.6-magnitude quake was a shallow 22 kilometers (14 miles), hitting in the sea 270 miles (435 kilometers) from Aceh’s provincial capital.

An alert that followed from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii advised countries all along the rim of the Indian Ocean, from Australia and India to as far off as Africa, that a seismically charged wave could head their way.

Two deadly tsunamis in the last decade — the most recent off Japan just one year ago — have left the world much better prepared.

Sirens sounded along coastlines and warnings spread like wildfire by mobile phone text messaging. Though often chaotic, evacuations began immediately with streets clogged with traffic, especially in Aceh.

The only wave to hit, though, was less than 30 inches (80 centimeters) high, rolling to Indonesia’s emptied coastline.

Just as the region was sighing relief, an 8.2-magnitude aftershock followed.
