So I guess if you've got a boat out there the best thing would be to haul ass out to sea (not South) as far as you can get?

EDIT: For those of you who are imagining a 15 ft. wall of water like in a disaster movie, this is more like a massive flood that keeps coming and then withdraws, pulling a lot of stuff (hopefully not people or animals) back out into the ocean with it.

Yes the waves are just very very long. So if you go out into open ocean with deep seas, you will barely feel it. As the wave approaches shore, the depth is shorter and that builds up the height and force.

They say all the water drains from the shore really quick, then a huge wave comes in.

Ah. I almost got it right. Yep, it's not like the 15 ft. wall of water those of us who are land-locked and watch too many movies might think.

That's a complicated equation that really deals with the topography of the floor around the coast.

Look at this map:

In some of that map, only maybe a couple hundred yards are in the zone, other areas significantly more.

Of course reality may punch that in the face. Indonesian quake shows how bad it can get.

Well, we'll see for sure if it is big enough when it hits.

There was a huge quake a while back. We had a tsunami warning but the actual wave that came here was only a few inches. The force of that wave though was enough to flood some docks and break the moorings off some ships.

Man our emergency response is so rinky dink. One of the servers that house maps for the evacuation zones is down. The sirens did not work in some places. The gov can't even get on tv cause those techs are pathetic (sorry have to deal with some of them).

And they upped the time that the tsunami could arrive... Now 15 min earlier than before.

No offense to the Indonesians, but I know that taught me you don't run down to the beach when the water recedes!

Yeah they are showing on the news some dummies going out to surf. It's still a ways away so I hope those idiots come in before then.

Hmnn I heard on the radio, but I can't confirm cause the SITE IS DOWN (geez!), that there may be an advisory for some areas of the west coast and maybe Alaska now too.

EDIT: Okay found a map (not text though), there is an advisory on the west coast...

The chorus of this song sounds like a good advice right about now.
