Heh, I walked up my street to a higher vantage point. There were onlookers there too. We were watching for some time. Though there was some stirring of the water, it really wasn't anything to see. Some fellow said it was like watching paint dry.

What's really amazing is how often Chile is hit with quakes above 7. Everything there is built like a concrete shithouse.

500 times stronger than in Haiti was most likely nowhere near the loss of life.

Yes, thank goodness. It's interesting, I never knew it to be a hotbed of earthquakes but from this incident you realize it is. The area was hit with the largest measured earthquake on record, a 9.5 in 1960. That's when we got hit with a tsunami in Hilo killing 62 people. I think that's why they were so worried.
