7.9 near American Samoa...

Trying to get to earthquake.gov but it must be getting hammered.

No tsunami expected for the West Coast USA. Not sure about here in Hawaii yet. Heard a tsunami did hit American Samoa going inland maybe 300 yds...

EDIT: Whoops tsunami.gov says it was an 8.3

1m is not so high but it can do damage if forceful enough.

I'm seeing warnings for Hawaii, and an 8.3 magnitude.

Surfers would scoff at 1m waves, but tsunami waves are of a different league.

The waves at Pago Pago were 5.1 feet above normal sea level, according to the Pacific Western Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii.

Holly Bundock, spokeswoman for the National Park Service's Pacific West Region in Oakland California, said "I would say we're alarmed," adding the service had heard from Mike Reynolds, superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa.

Reynolds told a Yellowstone dispatch operator that four tsunami waves, each 15 to 20 feet high, reaching half-mile to mile (1.6 miles) inland on island of Tutuila, where Pago Pago is.

"The National Park of American Samoa visitor center and its offices appear to be destroyed completely," Bundock said.

Reynolds reported deaths but had no confirmation of numbers, she said. "He's completely cut off from the rest of the island," Bundock said.

Local news reporting that the tsunami watch is lifted for Hawaii. Doesn't say that on the official gov page yet, but that page has been sufferring all morning.

No word of tsunami for Indonesia that I have heard but the quake itself leveled buildings and the death count is at 75 at least.

Samoa & American Samoa did get hit by the tsunami and there were some reports of some pretty grisly scenes. 100+ death toll there.
