The movie will be independent from the upcoming sequel trilogy.
Source: Vulture Vulture is reporting that 300 director Zach Snyder is working on a new Star Wars film for Disney. The twist is that this movie will not be a direct sequel to the original Star Wars films, but rather a stand alone movie based on the Akira Kurosawa classic Seven Samurai. For those who haven't watched the original, it's the tale of seven samurai hired by a town to stop a group of bandits who regularly pillage their harvest.
Lucas was long an admirer of the 1954 film, and has often cited as one of his favorite movies of all time. Allegedly, the Snyder project will be set vaguely after Episode VI and will be a standalone film. According to the report, the project will go into production around the same time as Episode VII, which Snyder is not directing (as is every other director of note).
While this is obviously still a Star Wars rumor, one of thousands at this point, I'm sort of hoping it'll be true. If it is a real project, I tnominate internet heartthrob Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play the lead. Even he couldn't kill a Star Wars film.
